Quicken vs. Quickbooks

I am in the process of establishing a "financial caregiver / daily money manager business where I am handling personal bookkeeping for Senior Citizens or Busy professionals who do not have the time or ability to do so, as well as provide bookkeeping for small businesses. What would you recommend as far as what versions to use of Quicken and / or Quickbooks. I use Quicken for my own personal accounting and have used Q/B for small bus., but thought that I should probably have the Quicken for individuals' bookkeeping. Also, can someone verify if - don't quicken and Q/B have the capacity for multiple companies/clients?Thanks.Natalie

Hello Natalie,

When determining which product to use I would ask the following:

Do I want to see a Cash In / Cash Out type of statement of activity (Quicken) or an Income / Expense type of statement (QuickBooks).

Quicken is more forgiving when entering multiple names for payments, whereas QuickBooks wants you to place them on a permanent list.

Quicken offers features such as investment (stocks and the like) tracking/downloading.

QuickBooks is more or less designed for the business that needs a true balance sheet and income statement.

As always, plan to keep current with each years release of these products. Each year bring more and more new features that you will be able to take advantage of.

Good Luck. I am sure they will need and appreciate your services.

Laura

Thanks Laura.

I can definitely see the need for the individuals with this type of service. I am looking forward to setting it up to help them out as well as create an income stream for my business.

Also, what would you suggest as for actual versions? Is it better to start out with the basis Q/B and then upgrade to the accountant version, or should i start with that even though i'm bookkeeper and not CPA? And for Quicken, should i go with 2005 or?

Hope to get your additional thoughts as well as anyone elses.

Thanks.

You don't have to be an accountant or CPA to take advantage of the Accountant Premier Edition. With the accountant edition you will get access to all of the custom reports in the other flavors, i.e., construction, manufacturing, retail, a real plus for a growing consulting business.

As for the year to purchase, I would always recommend upgrading each year. It is a small price to pay to stay on top of the market and remain competitive in your industry.

Good Luck.

I agree with Laura, do keep up with the versions. I have a small accounting practice and decided to invest in the Accountant Version, for it allows you to have all the versions (to satisfy all customers).

The past two years have brought major improvements so definitely keep up to date.

You do not need to be a CPA for the accountant version. And remember, if ever you have a problem...just post it here...or check out the HELP feature. It is GREAT.

Hope this helps you. And GOOD LUCK in your new venture.
