Quickbooks Pro 2013 upgrade problem

QuickBooks UK

Hi,

Upgrading from QB Pro 2010 UK to 2013 Pro.

Installation fine, and it upgrades the company file fine and i can work with the data the first time.

However, close out of the file and go back into it and it crashes with error;

Problem Event: BEX

Faulting Module: MSVCR90.dll

However, if I use the company sample file or create a new company it is fine and I can open and use the software.  This would therefore point to a problem with the upgrade of the 2010 company file or when 2013 tries to save it the first time.

Win 7 64bit.

I have been on to tech support for the last two hours, they came to conclusion that I had bad installation CD so sent me a link for a download - installed and exact same problem.

I installed it on another laptop that had never QB on it and have the same problems i.e. installs, uogrades file for the first time and then crashes when you go in again.

Thanks to Mollcons for advice given elsewhere on this forum however tried all those links without any success.

Thanks in advance.

PS: Just trying to install it on XP now to see if it is OS related.

Open the company information page cut and paste here so its not altered the data in the tel no field & Co reg no field & vat reg no field.

Hi Graceman,

Would you care to explain how that is relevant to the problem?

Further update:

Treid it on XP with the same error so it must be company file related.

My company file has custom fields added to the jobs page - does anyone know if these additional fields are picked up by the database upgrade wizard in QB 2013?

Thanks in advance.

The solution

The data in those fields can stop the upgrade. Its a rare issue and it was discovered trying to upgrade QB 2010 datafile.

The upgrade should just upgrade and not alter data it can add fields and it will rearrage the fields in teh tables in the undelying data but you will need QODBC to read this.

You may or may not have an issue but we cannot tell unless we see what is exactly in these fields.

If its an issue of the data thyat you do not want to publish here email me the data but please it must be cut and paste as you could in typing it miss something.

Since you seems to know QuickBooks better that Intuit perhaps you can help me. In US. Have Vista and using QuickBooks 2010. Installed 2013 Pro, from disk, and everything said fine. However 2013 will not open. The screen says opening quickbooks for a second or two and then just disappears. Any suggestions?

in the root directory of QB run the reboot.bat file with QB closed.

Then try if still same try opening QB and hold down ctrl key and see if the basic programm opens, it should open but without a data file open.

if this works open a sample data file or create a new data file if this then works then you will need to consider your data file is the problem.

Go back to the QB 2010 and run rebuild and then upgrade it again.

If you have Qb running and you can open a sample file or create a new file then the datatafile is in trouble.

This can happen if you have not verified in QB 2010 do you still have access to this system and teh old data file can you open it in QB 2010?

If so open the company information page and delete every field except the name verify save and then try the upgrade.

2010 opens and works fine.  2013 will not open at all. opening starts and then disappears. I believe it is not installing correctly but I do not know what steps to take . I have uninstalled and reinstalled three times.

Ok based on your posts so far you have vista and trying to install QB 2013 and so far have not managed to open QB 2013 in any way.

Is Vista in 64 bit mode or 32 bit?

It should not matter but worth knowing as QB 2013 will run on either.

Since you have tries several times I suggest you do a clean install but first uninstall QB 2013.

Then delete all the directories form your system manually  that have the QB 2013 install in them as uninstall does not clear them out.

Download pirform ccleaner free edition and run it to clean the registry.

Also do a registry search for QB 2013 and delete any residual entries. now re install

Turn off any background programs & services and do a basic host install.

Thank you. I checked and My Vista is 32 bit. The computer this is on does not have internet access so Vista has never had any updates. Would this matter?  I was also wondering if doing install in Selective Startup would make a difference?

You should not need selective start up unless you are trying to install in safe mode by stopping background programs running. Try Normal start up and install first.

But yes you need to have latest adobe reader and windows updates for QB 2013.

Is there anything else out of the ordinary as it all helps to understand what is happening or not.

Do you have IE8 or something else?

I am not sure what IE version. It would be whatever came preinstalled with Vista. Should this be updated too even though The computer I run Quickbooks on is never connected to the internet?

You should have Ie8 as Qb uses this for the screen to run.

SOLVED

THANK YOU GRACEMAN!!

Please see response from Gracemant to this issue that has been doing my head in for the last week - Intuit - please take note.

I opened my QB Pro 2010 file and backed up a portable file.

I opened QB Pro 2013 and upgraded that portable file - from my first post you will see that I am able to see the data after the initial upgrade only.

Once upgraded I clicked on all the tabs at the top and the company file would display however, based on Graceman's comments. when I tried to view the Company File information page this would crash it with the same error as noted in the original post.

I went back into Pro 2010 and deleted those fields in the company information file page (first save a screeen shot for later input) and then saved a portable back up file and then started 2013 and upgraded that portable file which did not have the VAT, Tel and company reg number - I only left the company na,e and address - all else was deleted by me.

This time following the upgrade I was able to open the company file information page without it crashing - not only that, I could close and finally open the file in 2013 without it crashing - results!!!!!

I will mark this solved (thanks to Graceman as noted above) and hopedully this will prevent some other poor sod from doing about 50 uninstalls / reinstalls, up to all hours of the morning, fighting with his women etc..........

Power to the community forum.

Kind regards.

Chesney

Now you understand the relevance to the problem.

Its certain charachters in those fields that causes this.

It took several months and a false reply from Intuit support to another poster here to find this.

Hi Graceman,

I have been dealing with this problem for months now.  I have recently upgraded from QB Pro 2011 to QB Pro 2013 and cannot keep it from not starting.  I don't get an error message anymore.  When I click on the icon to start QB's, it tries to start (the Opening Quickbooks window pops up) and then it shuts down and won't start.

I have installed it, unintalled it, called tech support twice and hired a computer repair guy who specializes in software problems.  I have tried installing it on another laptop and it works fine for a while and eventually won't start.  I've spend well over $300 to try and get this to work and still no success.  I have a couple of ID #'s that QB's support gave me if you are interested in seeing what they did to try and help the problem.  They remotely accessed my computer and even downloaded the program to make sure it wasn't my disk.

I'm completely at a loss.  I'm not really sure what you had Chesney do.  But I could really use some help from someone who has actually seen this before.

Thanks!
