What version of QB for the mac was the file created on? and what version of QB for Windows are you using?

QuickBooks for Mac cannot create a portable file. That's a Windows-only feature.
Your Mac-using client must save a backup for Windows. It's all detailed in the Help document in QuickBooks for Mac.
Note that you and the Mac client must be using year-compatible versions. Again, the details are in the Help documentation.
There are issues with round-tripping, among them incompatible reconciliations. More and more ProAdvisors are choosing to support their Mac clients by remote access (such as LogMein or GoToMyPC, both of which have Mac services) or purchasing Macs and QB for Mac.
