Hi Amy,

Thank you for the information.  I actually ended up calling support and they remotely reinstalled my original software since my system would not reinstall it like normal.  I am still having a few little issues with this install but at least I am up and running.  I have not installed the R8 at this point.  I plan on holding off for quite some time before I go forward.  Thanks again.  -- Joy

Why is R8 still available for download?  Why isn't R7 up as the default download until this is fixed?  I'm very frustrated because I just installed Q2011 and my only option for updating is R8 which is horribly broken

is there a solution yet? I seem to be ok with R8, but have a client on Vista machine that is not - I rolled her back to R6 on the 2nd and now I get an email from her that she once more cannot open QB!

baregatjax: No word on a fix yet.

Annoyeduser2: You don't want R7, because R7 had bugs too. R8 was released really quickly after R7 to fix a big problem there. I do wonder if some of the R8 problems actually were introduced in R7. You want R6. You may be able to contact a local ProAdvisor who might be able to help you get R6, depending on what your situation is.

If this helped, please give a "thumbs up" or mark it Solved.

 Thank you!

I have to admit that I'm concerned and mildly annoyed that Intuit has released two patches in a row with issues and has not pulled them from circulation.  There is no excuse for that.  Rolling yet another "fast" fix with insufficient QA, while new users are installing broken patches, does not seem to be a solution.  I was unable to even open the sample database without crashes.

Note that they did take R8 off of "automatic update" status so it isn't being pushed out automatically any more.

R7 had an error (at least one), it was pulled from circulation quickly. Unfortunately, the R8 release was rushed (my opinion) and had problems. Since the scope of the problem was not understood right away, so it was going out as an auto update. Once that happens, they can't STOP access to R8 - because if you have one workstation on R8 and another not, you have to update all to R8, so it has to be available.

They should, though, consider making R6 readily available for people who need to update that far, without going to R6. But it is complicated.

If you are at R6 & are not running into any errors, is there any compelling reason to update to R8 at this time?  I usually suggest that you wait a few weeks before applying an update, especially one that appears to be a major fix release.

  Thanks in advance.

Quite the contrary.  If you are on R6 and are having no problems there are compelling reasons NOT to upgrade to R8.  Wait for R9.  Or R10.

R8 fixed a bug introduced in R7. R7 fixed some problems that bugged some people, but few are mission critical. The biggest one probably was the issue of importing form templates.

See my list on the R7 update at http://www.sleeter.com/blog/2011/06/quickbooks-2011-r7-released/ and you can make up your own mind.

I'm generally recommending that people stay at R6. However, a lot of the problems people are attributing to R8 are probably actually already there in R6. I'm running R8 without any problems at all. But, caution is probably wise.

In a fit of pique, I must've negleted to mention that I DID install r9 and now it simply crashes-no fix no solution- I have 9 days to put in 18 months of financials-or at least this year to be current-about had it with QB, Intuit and ready snap.

Wow, that reply was hard to find, since it got stuck up here in the middle (on an August 30th comment). I don't like how the forum lets you put comments that aren't at the end of the discussion (but that is another issue).

If you are on R9 and you are still having crash problems, then there is either something corrupted in your company file or, more likely some issue with how the program is installed or configured on your particular computer system. It isn't a widespread issue with R9 from what I can see (I know of a number of successful R9 installations).

That doesn't make your particular situation any better or any less frustrating for you. Unfortunately, if you aren't on a service contract, you have to pay Intuit tech support to get around this.

Updates aren't going to (most likely) fix your issue, there is something going on in your system and it will be there even with updates.

It is hard to diagnose things remotely through a forum like this, without hands on the system. A few things that I'd take a look at to start with.

  • Can you open ANOTHER QB file successfully? Perhaps one of the sample files? That would help determine if it is a data corruption issue or not.
  • You might try UNINSTALLING the program via Windows, downloading the FULL installer from the support web site (not the web patch), and reinstalling. Sometimes that will resolve some issues.
  • If this doesn't work, leave us info on what operating system you have, if it is 32 or 64 bit, what version of Microsoft Office you have installed. But it is hard to diagnose these kinds of things through a forum discussion...

Amy,

Is there an estimated date as to when a fix may be ready?  My IT guys have a brand new laptop waiting for me, but we need to install QB on it so I can manage all of my 29 company files.  All of my files are only updated through R5 including our database server sotware and I do not see where I can just get a patch thru R6.

Thanks for all your help!

The previous versions are still available for downlaod, but the link isn't published anymore.

Go to the update for your edition.

Go to the manual update section,

right click the dowload link, and copy  the URL

Paste the URL into the address bar and replace R8 with R6

Well, if you are ALREADY on R8, that web patch won't do you any good. It only brings people up to R6 if they have an older version.

And, there are lots of problems with QuickBooks, not all are due to R8.

Run QuickBooks, press F2, what is the revision that you have? And, do you have the US version? This only applies to the US versions.

Okay, it's now September 22, 2011.  QuickBooks Premier 2011 is still asking me to update to R8 every time I open it.  Is there an update on when there will be a stable release?  Thanks.

I can't find any reference to one coming up...

I do notice that they have changed the support web site to take down all the warnings. I'm not sure if that means that they no longer consider this to be an issue? Just speculation on my part.

If you want to get rid of the reminders, take a look at this article: http://www.sleeter.com/blog/2011/02/stopping-quickbooks-automatic-updates-from-installing/

It appears to me that Intuit is not planning on fixing the 2011 R8 issues, but instead expects many users to upgrade to 2012. This doesn't make sense as far as fixing the trust lost by the [removed]-ups of the past releases. Who wants to pay for the latest and greatest QuickBooks program when the last one was such a failure and creating such a burden for Users and Pro-Advisors.

When a client looses their confidence in an application their accountant uses, they also loose confidence in the accountant, whether or not that is a justified association. When an accounting practice builds their entire practice around one software, like QuickBooks, and it fails, it can easily damage the reputation of that practice. To protect that practice, it becomes necessary to consider other alternatives to QuickBooks.

The problems of 2011 and the R7 and R8 updates still remains unresolved. No positive communication on the fixes has been posted or communicated.

I don't entirely agree. I believe that 2011 R9 is under development. Intuit does support prior year products (for three years, until they are sunsetted). For example, earlier this month they released the 2010 R13 update.

My guess is that the resources to update products have been directed towards the 2012 release (and the 2012 R3 update that is already in the works for that), so that there have been fewer resources available for 2011 R9. However, I'm certain that this release will come.

However, I do believe that they aren't as concerned about this update as we are. When the R8 problems were first apparent, they posted cautions about using it on their support web site, recommending that you don't install. Then, later, they backed off of that and just gave some more vague cautions. Now I see that all of the warnings have been removed from the web site. This indicates to me that they don't believe that it is as big an issue.

I will note that I have been running R8 without ANY problems on my system, although that isn't much of an indication.

Hey, I'm just trying to be a squeaky wheel for all those clients who are squeeking at me... I'm sure there will be an R9 for 2011, but I've been explaining to clients for a long time now why we aren't on the "latest" release.

"My guess is that the resources to update products have been directed towards the 2012 release (and the 2012 R3 update that is already in the works for that), ..." And that has been Intuit's history! Even before its released, its gotta be fixed, and it seems that the old is never fixed ... " earlier this month they released the 2010 R13 update. "

"However, I do believe that they aren't as concerned about this update as we are." Of course they aren't! Intuit has created their monster with a schedule of providing a "new" version of QuickBooks to their subscribers every 12 months. We have a local IT company who uses the expression (client speaking) "I just want IT to work."  I think that is a sentiment that everyone has. For many of us we have quit complaining (in constructive ways) about how IT fails, including software applications like QuickBooks. Instead of making promises of how the next new product is going to be better, why don't we see better completion of fullfiling the expectations of the previous product? And no Microsoft, changing the look doesn't necesarily improve a softwares function...ribbons, menus...whatever!

I just want it to work (without any caveats, work-arounds or exceptions.)
