Important Announcement! A planned system-wide upgrade will take place over the Memorial Day Weekend in the US (From Thurs, May 24, 2012 at 6 pm PDT thru Tues, May 29, 2012 at 5 am PDT). This includes QuickBooks, QuickBooks Payroll, Point of Sale, & Salesforce.com. This is only for US based products. This does not affect QuickBooks Online customers! QBTIP: It's easy to add company files to your payroll subscription

It's easy to add company files to your payroll subscription without calling customer service.  This gives you near 7x24 access with no need to wait on hold and no need to transcribe long numbers.

For Basic and Enhanced Payroll: You can add additional company files to your subscription and you can change the EIN in a payroll file, if needed. If you just plow ahead it will work and is easy to do.

Adding a file:   When you have a new file you want to add to payroll, just try to use a payroll feature or choose the option on the Employee menu to add the file to your subscription. Choose Employees | Payroll | Use my existing payroll service.    A few clicks later it's done.

(If the option is not there, it is because you need to do this from a machine where you already have an existing service.)

Changing an EIN: Similarly, if you need to change the EIN in a subscribed file, just do that from the Company menu and then try to use a payroll feature. You will be prompted to re-add the file to your subscription.

Note these tips apply to QB 2012 version and versions as far back as 2008.

Ok, so I used to be able to add a customer payroll to my Enhanced Accts Subs (even tho they have their own subs)  in order to do state reports and to prefill the preparer info.   It is very irritating that I no longer seem to be able to do that.   We pay enough for our memberships and our software that we should be given that option.

You don't need to add them at all. If you are using their file on your computer, you should have access to the state forms.

I have tried that.  The window pops up that says QuickBooks Online Subscription.  It is blank and nothing ever comes up in it.  I have done this before and always had it work, but for some reason for today and this company, no luck.

I am trying to add this client to my existing payroll subscription at the office. I am trying to do it remotely. His quickbooks edition is 2009- so I cannot convert him to a newer edition. The options you mention are not on his quickbooks. He has never had the payroll option.

You cannot use these steps (nor should you add your subscription) to your client's machine either if you're there or using remote acces to that machine from your office.  Is that what you're doing?
