QB Pro 2011 will not do the R6 update

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2011

The R6 update gets stuck at the box

You must shutdown QuickBooks (and QuickBooks components) before the update can be installed.
Attempting to shutdown components...

You may have to reboot your computer to shut down all QuickBooks related applications

How do I get it to do the R6 update, I have nothing else running. when it is attempting to shutdown components.

Get rid of the update files that you have now. See this article on how to do that.

I would then suggest trying a manual update - go to the support site and select your product, then click the "update" button. This downloads a patch file, you can run that to do the update. It uses a different update mechanism and should work.

If this helped, please give a "thumbs up" or mark it Solved.

Well, there was nothing in the DownloadQB20 folder on my computer so there was nothing to delete.  Next went to the support site and did the download.  When all was done and it asked if I wanted to install, I said yes.  Then the same message came up, You must shutdown QB's components...

I might just have to put up with it!

Next step - uninstall QuickBooks, get the full version from the support site (not the update, but the full version, and make sure you get the version that matches what you already have) and reinstall. The downloaded version will already have the latest patch.

Make sure, before you uninstall, that you know your license and product numbers. These are on the original CD, and you can also see it in your current installation if you press F2.

Do this on a weekday during business hours so that you can contact registration easily IF you have to reregister your product. You shouldn't under normal circumstances, as long as you enter the info (phone, or whatever they ask) that you used when you originally registered.

I don't know that it is necessary to uninstall and reinstall.  There are QB components running in the background that can be shut down in task manager.

  1. Right-click the Windows taskbar and select Task Manager.
  2. Click the Processes tab.
  3. End any of the following QB-related processes if they are listed. (Select each process and then clickEnd Process.  )
    • QBW32.exe
    • QBHelp.exe
    • qbupdate.exe
    • support.exe
    • mrtmngr.exe
    • qbdagent2002.exe
    • qbdagent2001.exe
    • qbdagent.exe
    • axlbridge.exe

That support article is for a very different issue than the one described here. However, it can't hurt to try that first.

Going to the Processes tab worked.  The only one on there was the QBW32.exe so I ended that.  Then went to install the update and it went all the way through.  I didn't know about working with the process tab, now I do!  Thank you for your help.
