If you are installing 2005 on a Windows 7 machine, it will almost definitely not run. Only 2010 and newer are supported on that platform.
If not, see the article below for help on registering QB on a new machine.
Thanks for responding. Actually installing on an XP . Turns out to be a very easy solution. Call into intuit, get a validation code and then register using the tab for register by phone. That link will then ask you to enter validation code. Very easy, but it took about 5 techs to get to someone that knew that. Everyone kept saying 2005 not supported, which it is not, but I did not want an upgrade only to reuse what was already registered. Again, someone with 2005 knowledge was able to help within 20 seconds. Must have taken me about 45 minutes to get to that last 20 seconds. Bottom line, can re-register 2005. Appreciate you responding.
I can also vouch that Memere post is incorrect. Not only will Quickbooks 2005 run on Windows 7 that but contrary to his posting it will also register.
Not to mention, I also expericened the same run around wiht Intuit trying to register my Premier 2005. It was ultimately resolved in the same manner as the OP.
My install of quickbooks 2005 is using Windows 7 Professional. After the I installed from the CD I opened the program and immediatly recieved the Quickbooks install error 1904 ( failed to register ). I googled the error code and found the below solution.
To get the program to open I first had to uninstall using Revo uninstall at maximum removal, then do a reinstall. Without opening the program I then ran the Microsoft Troubleshooter/ run programs made for previous versions of windows. After the compatiblity service ran I then rebooted into safe mode,
By right clicking on the Quickbooks shortcut and selecting Open file location I then ran reboot.bat to get everything registered and then rebooted back into the OS.
The program then opened fine but it would not register on line. So to get it registered I proceeded as noted in the post above: Click on Help/register/register by phone, then calling for a registration code.
Hope this helps because it will probably work for anyone using Window's 7 and Quickbooks 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, or 2009.
Not all features will work -- like payroll, online banking, email, merchant services, etc. Plus, I would be worried about how long it would work and I wouldn't want to put the data at risk of data integrity problems. QB Pro 2012 has been on sale for $100 and there are a lot of new features and enhancements over the years.
