QB Mac 2010 SLOW & Painful!

US QuickBooks for Macintosh : 2010

QB 2010 Mac painfully slow to open initially here also. Recording transactions take up to 20 seconds. Just completed Payroll (QuickBooks Paycycle). Took over 45 seconds to export 12 checks. Payroll Detail report won't directly open in Excel. Had to reopen report, then click on "open in Excel" to print. Payroll Summary report took 20 seconds to open in Excel. Also once the report was opened and printed, I have a blank window that I have to close (generated by Paycycle). QB 2007 Mac had some issues that I lived with, but this 2010 version is NOT acceptable. If your R7 release does not address and cure these issues, rest assured you will be refunding my money. Is your tech support preparing a utility to convert my 2010 file back to 2007? Or are we going to see a fix for these issues VERY soon? I will be double posting this by the way...

Right - well, I hope R7 helps your situation.   I'm pretty sure it will but the only proof is to try it when it comes out.

Intuit doesn't reveal when updates are slated for release—legal reasons and all. However, since it's been mentioned here, you can be sure that the team is working on it now.

Debi, thanks for the technical follow up.  It is amazing that QuickBooks has such an advanced feature. :)  Still, if you or someone else wouldn't mind, please post to this thread when R7 is released.  Thanks!

I know you are being sarcastic but actually a lot of QuickBooks Mac is quite advanced.   This advanced business is a double edged sword.

In this particular case the performance problems you are experiencing are caused by the advanced technology - the adoption of CoreData.  It was faster in many ways when it used the older SQLite.  There's something to be said for "tried and true".   Prior to 2006 it used C-Index, which dates back to at least the early 1990s, and was faster still.   But far less reliable.

With any new technology there is a learning curve.   Hopefully we've learned how to make CoreData fast.  We've done a lot up to now but the biggest gains yet will be in the R7 release.

Before you ask - we adopted Core Data for the flexibility and safety it provides.  The flexibility makes it faster to add features.  Hopefully the next year's release will demonstrate that.

I have downloaded R8 and QB continues to be unbelievably slow and frustrated, and all I use it for is simple and basic checkbook keeping.  It takes forever to open.  When I try and do a transaction as easy as entering a month's interest charge to a credit card bill, it takes MINUTES to calculate and finish.  This has been worse than a complete waste of money.

I'm sorry to hear that, Paul.   If you'd be willing to submit your data file we can look at it under instrumentation and determine why it is performing so slow on your data.  We'll also need to know your computer system profile.

If you are willing to do this, please contact me at the email address on my profile and identify yourself by linking back to this thread.  Do provide your email address in the body.

Sorry that is all I can offer you at this point - we aren't seeing the performance problem you are so it has to be something specific about your machine or data.  Maybe a great many people experience the same thing - we really want to do everything we can to correct it. But we need your help.

Unfortunately, I have release 8 and feel the same pain.  While it is a tiny bit faster than several of the past versions (maybe, could be placebo effect), it is still glacial and significantly hampers the ability to use it productively on a daily basis.  I now have the very fastest MacBook Pro i7 with 8 megs of Ram and it showed virtually no improvement over my older mac.

Biscotti, you've been nice to look into my situation in the past and examine my file.  I guess I just don't see where this is headed and whether I can still commit to using this product going forward.  Each new release for QB 2010 has ultimately done very little to enhance overall speed, so I wonder if this issue is ultimately able to be fixed with the underlying technology being used.

Also, it used to be able to do a rebuild on earlier versions of QB2010.  Now, it just grinds and grinds, never finishing.

We did make significant improvements to performance in R6 and R7.   These were around item histories and then around Core Data in general.   That doesn't appear to have helped your situation significantly.

What is the name of the file gbh?   We can look at it again.  It sounds like the problem is in recording of transactions and the initial loading of the cache file.

Thanks - I can't get to my Intuit email at the moment but should see it once I get access again.

I've run a test today of a file that was taking all night to verify on one users 4 GB MacBook Pro that verified in 15 minutes on my 10 GB Mac Pro.   I have a feeling that RAM is the critical factor and beyond a certain level some of these things are paging to disk like crazy.

I should not have to have a 10GB Ram computer to run your software!  Haven't seen much improvement in the releases since my initial post.  Still have many of the same issues other than transaction recording has speeded up a bit. Have not been able to recommended QB 2010 to anyone.  Later.....

I'm not saying you should require 10 GB.  I'm just trying to determine where slowdowns still are an issue and why so we can fix them.

I'll add that my other computer runsQuickBooks just fine, is three years old, and has 3 GB.  We did a lot to improve RAM usage of CoreData in R6.   But of course I believe you when you say it is running slow on your machine and with your company file.  I'm just pretty sure it is RAM use that we need to optimize further.
