QB Accounting 2010 on Windows 7

Having problems installing QB Accounting 2010 on Windows 7. Error message: "MSI returned 1603: Fatal error during installation." Tried to use quickbooks.msi. Does not work either, asking for a CD (which is in but apparently the system does not see it). Any suggestions how to fix this?

Uninstall if necessary and reboot the computer & try again to see if you get the same error message.  If so, search for it at www.quickbooks.com/support

IanaZ,

You may need to contact QuickBooks Support or your local computer technician for assistance diagnosing the cause of this error.  MSI error 1603 can have different causes.  QuickBooks installs other components using the windows installer that may give an MSI error.  Can you provide additional information?

  • Is there more text in the error message, that may direct us to which installer failed?
  • Has QuickBooks installed correctly before on this system?
  • Did you receive an error when you uninstalled?
  • Have you installed this version of QuickBooks successfully on any other computers?

Older versions of Windows have a Windows Installer Utility that can resolve some of the causes for this  error.  You may want to check with your local technician to see if an equivalent utility is available for Windows 7 or search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for similar errors.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

Thank you,

"MSI returned 1603: Fatal error during installation."  - that's the entire message, nothing else there.

I have QB Simple Start on the same  PC - had no problems with installation.

When I first installed Accounting edition, I had an error message/ problem with third party components, which I already resolved.

I have not tried to install Accounting edition on any other computers.

Iana,

My best guess is there is either something wrong with the CD or the CD drive, both of which are really unlikely.  Here are a couple of things you can try to see if my guess is correct:

  • Install on another computer - if there is an error it's most likely the disk, if not it may be the drive
  • Try copying the disk to the hard drive - usually very time consuming and you need to have a big drive - if you receive an error while copying, it's the disk or the disk drive, otherwise install from the copy to see if you still get the error - if you do it's something in the way Windows is set up.

If you do not feel comfortable trying these steps, you may want to pull in your local computer technician.

Thanks,

Dave
