QB 2009 upgrade won't complete

US QuickBooks Premier : 2009: Accountant

Why won't my upgrade to release 8 on QB 2009 premier complete? I had this problem for a few days and now release 9 is available. Neither work. They stop at about 71% and give me the error code 1601. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall like the help section says and I can't get it to uninstall. I found the esgservices.dat file and renamed it. Tried to uninstall and got it off then I reinstalled it and I'm now getting the same error code. Now I can't find the esgservice.dat file. I tried to get updates from within the sample file as suggested. That runs fine, but I still get the message that a new release is available. I downloaded the patch from the website and tried to upgrade that way and it still won't get past 70%. I don't have this problem on my other computer that's running XP.I'm using Vista Ultimate on this laptop - I think that's the problem!

I've tired the automatic download and the manual download and neither one will complete. I'm not updating servers, I'm only updating my laptop which happens to be on Vista. It gets to 70% and quits and gives me error code 1601. I've tried the steps on the support site for this error code and I still can't get it to update. Now I can't get it to uninstall either.
