QB 2008 Discontinuation of Service

QB 2008 Discontinuation of service; Has been announced as April 2011, this is just 11 months after the launch of the first multicurrency version of QB since Qb 2006.

This is not only unreasonable but in the case of purchases made between January 2010 and May 19th 2010 the launch of QB 2010; then its also unfair unless free or substantial discounts are offered.

I open this in the hope that reason prevails. post your comments to this thread

Well, I suppose inevitable but unfair nevertheless.

Just because QB withdraw their service doesn't mean you have to upgrade unless used for payroll.  Support for year end payroll in 2006 has already been withdrawn, so payroll users will have already upgraded to 2010 probably (or chosen a much cheaper alternative).

The software will still work for 2006 and 2008 (as it does for all my clients' versions from pre-2001 !) and there are plenty of professional advisors who have better knowledge of  the products than QB support generally.

Don't worry too much !

You're right, we should keep a positive view on this change and maybe even see it as a good thing.  By the way, how much would you charge per hour to sort out any issues i may have?

As you seem to be based in US, I don't think this appropriate; if you are in the UK, then maybe, but I am not prepared to divulge my fees in public!  you could email me separately at efiling @ btinternet . com (without the spaces !) if serious

O.K.

So, Discontinuation of service has been announced as of next Month, so why am I paying £10.50 + VAT a month for a product that will no longer be supported? Should I cancel my support insurance, as your post indicates that support will not be forthcoming!

Intuit send a monthly invoice, on direct debit for support, I have not received any notification that it will be terminated soon, or have I missed something? Am I pouring money down a drain?

I have considered several times on an upgrade to 2010 Pro, but been put off by the many posts on this forum of the troubles encountered.

Any thoughts, I run a business, not a constant battle to ensure my accounts package will help me.

Hi Trumps, as it appears you haven't been informed i have cut and pasted the main bulk of an email i was sent; it may not be relevant but at least it gives you the flavour of what's happening.  Like you i run a business and don't want to know anything but that my books are done and correct, which is why i bought this supposedly good software.....

The email reads:

Important Notice

Avoid future service interruption, upgrade by 5 April 2011

Additional services discontinued after
5 April 2011
• Avoid service interruption, upgrade to the latest QuickBooks

• Please call us on 0808 168 9535

Some important changes are occurring that could affect you as a user of QuickBooks PRO 2008. After 5 April 2011, Intuit will no longer maintain additional services on QuickBooks 2008. While your software will continue to work as before, it does mean you’ll no longer be able to sign up to or access these discontinued services. If you plan to use any of these services in the future, you will need to move to the latest version of QuickBooks. Here’s what is affected;

One-off pay-per-incident support will not be available
Payroll services will cease which may be needed to complete tax returns
Live technical support including remote access
Product support via the phone or online
Email support at any time
Data backup and recovery support
Why are these services being discontinued for QuickBooks 2008?

We’re committed to keeping our products affordable for our customers, whilst not compromising on our level of service. To deliver on this promise, we must carefully manage the costs to maintain older product releases. By focusing our efforts on the latest version of QuickBooks, we can give you the best service at the right price.

Avoid interruption to your QuickBooks Payroll and Support services by acting now

By moving to the latest version of QuickBooks, you can continue to sign up to or access these services without any issue. Migration takes just a few minutes, and you can take advantage of our latest product enhancements.

New VAT Centre to manage VAT fast
New Multicurrency feature to trade abroad with ease
New Company snapshot feature to instantly view performance
Improved Multi-user access to work better together

We’re here to help make any transitions easy. So to find out more or to hear about what special discounts are available to you, get in touch before 5 April 2011. Please contact us free on 0808 168 9535

As a professional adviser we support a lot of clients.  If you are using 2008 without the payroll then find a professional adviser.  They can be better and cheaper than the Intuit help desk for support.  Also any Pro Advisor that is good will get to know your  individual set up and can offer a tailored support solution.

My clients' main issue is that if they are using 2008 with Payroll they are now being forced to move to QB 2010 in the UK at rather short notice.  Plus Inituit have also removed the discounted Payroll annual one-off payment option that Professional Advisors once were able to offer to their client base.  Payroll is now only available on a monthly subscription direct from Intuit.

I am being asked to look at alternatives to QuickBooks payroll now by some of my clients.

As a professional advisor, I support this view.

Those of my clients who are still using 2006 (and working perfectly OK) have ceased their exorbitant payroll subscription and now use one that costs just £50 a year and files all on-line.  OK, they have to then manually enter the payroll figures into QBs but I give them a memorised journal transaction to do so and they cope perfectly well.

Or for some, I do the payroll for them at a much reduced fee!

Those on 2008 will be doing the same shortly.

I can easily see the position you hold as professional advisors and that is one solution, however, a company cannot be allowed to sell a product which it then removes support for within 12 months of sale.....can it?  Also, there is a minimum charge for engaging an independent advisor and they are unlikely to send all day at the end of a phone waiting for a call.  I bought a package with a clear support plan and now that is being removed and i am being disadvantaged, consumer law exists to protect the consumer from such practises as Intuit are about to find out i hope!

I fully support your comments, Graceman. The very least that Intuit should do if they do indeed want to discontinue 2008, is to offer attractive discounts to those 2008 users to upgrade to 2010 (or even 2011, if indeed we are to get a new release this year as has happened in the US).

I can understand Intuit's need to reduce their costs of maintenance, but to deny recent purchasers of the deprecated version a cheap upgrade path, is unacceptable.
