PTIN System
I've been putting off getting my new PTIN until they get the bugs out of the system. Have any of you done it in the past few days, and, if so, did it go smoothly?

Archie: I renewed mine in the beginning and it took awhile. However one of my friends whom is a CPA renewed his last week and it went extremely quick so I think now is the time

I did mine right after the system came online, and it went without a hitch. I was online, registered, paid up, and out of there within a few minutes. However, I was only renewing or re-registering my existing PTIN. I believe that's what you'll be doing too so don't expect any problems. It might be different for folks applying for a PTIN for the first time so maybe someone else will have had different results.
Thanks for the responses, guys. I already had problems during the first few days, and I was trying to re-register. The system was rejecting my personal data as a mismatch, and it matched perfectly. I tried 4 or 5 times, then decided to let it rest for a month or so.
From your post and Mt Juliet's, it sounds as though it'll be hit and miss. Good luck.
Mine just took 3 days for the approval on the renewal however my friends was renewed the same day after the payment was accepted. Make sure you look at the system so you see the dates properly as its a little tricky. What type of problems are you encountering Archie?

I did mine some time ago. I had a problem with the information from the the 2009 tax return, so I used the 2008 tax return info and it went through.

I did mine about 3 weeks ago ----------------- no problems.

I renewed mine 5 days ago, and it went without problem.
The video archived on the IRS website helped. See under #6 PTIN Demo http://www.irs.gov/retirement/...
Some posts on this forum were also very helpful, so I made sure to omit my middle initial. CAF number field seems to have been fixed since I could enter all numbers and letter at the end.
On the business page - which was not mentioned in the video - I was a bit hesitant, and decided to not enter my EFIN number or any other information that was not marked as mandatory with the red asterisk... why risk discrepancies, right?
If you are already a Circular 230 practitioner, make sure that you enter your credentials when asked or otherwise you will be asked to pass a competency test whenever they will get to it.
All in all, I was scared through the whole process, went VERY SLOWLY, and was relieved when I saw that they gave me my old number back.
Good luck to you!
Thanks, Corae, you gave me some good pointers. I'll give it another shot tomorrow -- unless it's another federal holiday.

I did mine for both of us about a week ago and it went quite smoothly. We received our original PTINs. It just took a little time. (And money, of course.)
I applied as a first time applicant , and it went very smoothly, all online in about 20 to 30 minutes.

It went horribly for me on the computer, so then I filed on paper on 11/2/10. So far they haven't cashed my check. Then I saw a post from someone on a CPA list-serve, to the effect that if your last name is different from that of the primary taxpayer on your 1040 (that's my situation, all right) they won't get their glitch fixed until 12/6/10. I plan to call them up on 12/6, ask if they have my paper application from 11/2, ask if it looks all right to them and if they can process it and cash my check.
Stupidest way to run a government that I've ever heard of (or, on a par with some other stupid things that recent governments have done).
I could not register on the computer either.... I tried for 4 weeks then finally sent in my paper registration 11-22-10. My name is different than the primary taxpayer as well... thank you for letting know that I'm not the incapable one. I have found that I can not get an electronic power of attorney from clients whose last names are different either. The IRS can make sure everyone with different last names gets their EIC check but they can not get into the 21st century with the professional women. sorry for the sarcasm!
