Make sure the PC side is updated to the latest version of 2009.  There was a problem on the PC exporting to Mac in the first one or two revisions of it.   I think if that's the problem you are encountering the .qbb file will be rather small when you check the size of it in the finder.

If you're going to be round-tripping your files with your bookkeeper, you'll both need to be using year-compatible versions. Here's what the Help documentation says:

"QuickBooks 2010 for Mac can share files (2-way) with U.S. versions of QuickBooks Pro, Premier, and Premier Accountant 2010 for Windows; QuickBooks 2010 for Mac can convert files (1-way) from U.S. versions of QuickBooks Simple Start, Pro, Premier, and Premier Accountant Edition 2008, 2009, and 2010 for Windows."

Thanks to you both for taking the time to respond. I now see that my bookkeeper is going to need to upgrade to QB Pro 2010 for all future round trip scenarios and I have offered to pay for that upgrade. The thing that concerns me at this point is that according to the Help Documentation posted (thanks Debi) I should be able to at least open the document coming from my bookkeepers QB Pro 2009 version in my MAC 2010 version. Is there an obvious reason why I cannot? I REALLY need to be able to get this document open. My business billing is at a standstill and I am going to be in big trouble very quickly!

Thanks a million!

Jason

  • As Biscotti said above, make sure that your bookkeeper's QB 2009 Win is fully updated before the file is output for the Mac. (This is critical.) Also make sure your QB 2010 for Mac is fully updated before you open the file from your bookkeeper.
  • In addition, make sure your bookkeeper hasn't added anything that might cause hiccups, particularly things don't translate to the Mac side. (See the wiki entry "What does NOT convert from Windows to QB 2009 for Mac.")
  • Reconciliations done on the Windows side don't always translate properly. Just do them on the Mac side (when you finally get the file over there).
  • Have your bookkeeper rebuild the data file a couple of times on the PC side and then output the file for the Mac.

Please post back to say whether anything worked—or didn't.

So... just a follow up. I decided that my need to get billing out asap far outweighed my need to save a $150. So... I had my bookkeeper buy the QB Pro 2010 for Windows (and bill me for it). She installed it. Pulled in my file. Saved it as a MAC file and sent it to me. Sad to say, that after $300 in updated software I am getting the same Round Trip error. Really starting to hate QB.

Yeah Debi, thanks! My bookkeeper has been in the loop on everything. It just keeps telling me that the Round Trip file was created in an older version of MAC-QB and that QB2010 cannot open it.

jhausman, I think you need to call Technical Support. Tell them what you've said here. In fact, maybe you can even get them to read this forum discussion!

I believe that Tech Support can help you successfully upgrade your file.

salabina4, are you saying that you have QB 2010 for Mac and cannot open a QB 2009 for Windows backup-for-Mac file?

Latest post

Here is what we had to do. I paid for my bookkeeper to get the newest QB for Windows. I restored the file that I sent her (as it was BEFORE she did several months of updating). Then I saved it out again for Windows. She pulled it into her QB and manually re-did all of the updates she had done then saved it out again for me. The Round Trip problem was that the file she was working with was from MAC2006. Once I updated that file in Mac 2010 then sent it to her she was able to update and save it. That saved file is now seen as coming from my MAC2010 and NOT from (by way of Windows) the MAC2006.

Hope this helps. It cost me a LOT of money to do all this. My bookkeeper essentially did the work twice and I had to buy the software for two platforms.
