Price List Discount Not Reflected on Customer's Invoice

US QuickBooks for Macintosh : 2009

I set up a Price List for a Friends & Family discount for a client, and noted this in a customer's profile appropriately, but the discount still isn't reflected on the invoice. This is the QB Mac version, converted to Windows--I'm using a portable version.

Price Levels aren't really visible on the screen view or print out view of invoices. It's only one of the options for giving discounts and in my class I show a few other ways that give the visibility to a customer, if that is what is wanted. Price levels are more of a way to set various standard pricing and linked to certain customers.

When you first create an invoice for a customer with a price level, when you select the customer name and tab out of the name field, the Price Level displays near the customer name field. That is how you know the price level is active. Then, the prices will have dropdown functionality, so you can see Base and all the price levels for the item. That's it, that is all the indication you get.

If you want them to SEE how good you are being to them, then instead of using price levels, you can use regular rates, a subtotal item, and then a Discount Item that can be a % or an amount off the total. Or, use the discount item by itself right after any item that you want to reduce.

Thanks for responding, but I still need some help.   I understand the process for setting up the price levels and attaching them to different customers.  However, my problem is that when creating a sales receipt, the discount is not reflected anywhere on the receipt.

I see the 'Friends & Family' notation next to the customer's name, but when I hit the rate drop down box the discounted price is the same as the base price.  I set up to be a 33% reduction of the base price, rounded to the nearest dollar.  In this case, a $3.00 greeting card should be priced at $2.00 for this customer, but the choice is not there.

I guess I can use your second suggestion (i.e. using subtotals and a discount item) but do not like to tell a customer yet again that "I don't know why QuickBooks isn't cooperating".

The Mac version seems really wonky.  Is that the problem?  What else could be going wrong?

Thanks for your help.

I completely overlooked that you are using the Mac version. I have moved your issue to the Mac section of the forum. I have a Mac reference guide but the index doesn't list Price Lists or Price Levels at all. Maybe others can be more help, here in Mac World.

Price levels aren't yet supported on the Mac version.

qbteachmt, Lisa states that it is Windows version (converted from Mac) so any questions regarding price levels would have to be addressed back in the Windows forum because, as Biscotti states, Mac doesn't have price levels.

Thanks for all the great discussion.  My client converts the file to windows before giving it to me, and then I convert it back for her when I am finished with it.

FYI for all you accountants:  The Mac-Windows transfer doesn't work for us unless we do it in person, on a flash drive.  Emailing seems to do something to the file that renders it unopenable.  You do not have the option of creating an Accountant's version in this case.  I am extremely thankful that I have an understanding client---I think QB put this version out there without thinking it through.

I will abandon the price list idea and try the other suggestions.  Thanks, all.

Okay, this has been a good lesson. The client converts a Mac file to a Windows file, then Lisa tries to use a feature that doesn't port back to the Mac. Thanks, everyone. The Mac folks made the difference for this issue. I knew you could help!

Lisa335, you might want to read this Wiki entry (taken from QB 2009 for Mac's Help): "What does NOT convert from Windows to Mac."
