People who want free advice

Now that it's tax season, does anyone have a professional, quick way to respond to people calling during tax season wanting free tax information or advice? I mean non-clients.  I find that 98% of these people aren't prospective clients, only people who don't want to pay anyone, and usually have a much more complicated issue than they realize. Answering any questions for these people is a real liability, and a real time-waster during tax season. Any ideas, besides just "I can't answer that on the phone, you need to make an appointment"?

A positive contact is always better than a negative contact, as they say in marketing a contact with a good experience will tell five people but a contact with a negative experience will tell nine people.

You are right that you have no obligation to provide free advice, but once you have made that statement to them and offered to make an appointment to discuss services you can provide ask them for their email address so you can send them a link to your website or the IRS site where they can find answers to many of their questions.

I hope this helps,

Scott
