Peer review in Virginia

Is there anyone out there providing bookkeeping services in Virginia? If so, can you tell me if you are subject to a peer review because you prepare finanical statements? I have been told that because financial statements are being prepared, I would have to register my firm with the Board of Accountancy and be subject to a peer review. Thanks!

If you're a CPA and a member of the AICPA or your state CPA association, then yes you'll probably need a peer review. Otherwise, check with you state board of accountancy to see what the rules are for your state (google it to find it).

You're welcome--glad I could help! I'm glad you find my book useful--that is why I wrote it! I'd love it if you could write a short review for me on amazon!

Michelle,

This isn't exactly what the user was asking about, but when CA changed it's rules there was a lot of teeth gnashing about practice privilege. The attached files were something that became available about then and might be useful.

Before relying on anything in these you would want to verify the rules for yourself, of course.

So this is what I read about: if I am a CPA licensed in NJ and I prepare a resident 1120 for my brother in CA, I am in violation of CA laws since I am not licensed as a CPA in CA ? Is this correct?

CA exempts 1040s, but DE does not, so am I breaking DE laws?

See the attached, and also search for a file called "pphandbook". The title page shows "California Practice Privilege Handbook" and was published by the CA Board of Accountancy 1-26-2006. I have it as a pdf file, but it's 1.5mb but I'm not going to upload it from home.

Also -  CALIFORNIA CODE OF REGULATIONS TITLE 16. Professional and Vocational Regulations DIVISION 1. Board of Accountancy Regulations ARTICLE 4. PRACTICE PRIVILEGES (Sections 26 - 35.1) is the ultimate source of information.

If you are a member of the AICPA, the June 2008 issue of Journal of Accountancy has an article about this subject.

I hope this helps,

Scott

I know about the article in June 2008, that's what got me started on this. Your spreadsheet is great, but how does it effect me?

Perhaps not, although you might be affected.

Just kidding.

You'll have to decide whether this has any meaning to you. I was just providing additional resources regarding practice privilege in California.
