Packaging goods for safe shipping
What's a good way to determine how best to package my goods for shipping?

One way to do this if you are doing a lot of commercial shipping is to make some test runs and evaluate actual results. I was in a local mail store lately discussing shipping girl scout cookies of all things. And we got into a big conversation about the pros and cons of shipping various items into various regions. "Regions" seemed to be a big key as well. Nothing quite like consulting the experts.

BTW: Girl scout cookies? Don't use the postal system in a box marked cookies...that's what I was told.
I found this article with a link to a new product by one of the big shipping companies that I consider answers this question. Dennis, your contribution is still valuable, however, and I will carry out tests also. Far better I take the hit when there's no customer to disappoint.

Yes, that is pretty much what I was saying. With all due respect to postal system employees (and I have known several dedicated pros over the years), the post office has been taking some major hits. I was just reading in today's news of an employee stealing stamps in transit to retail outlets and attempting to sell them on eBay. That does create image problems for the postal service, although I can't imagine what this thief could have been thinking.
Also try offering an outlet for your customers to tell you how satisfied they were with their orders that were shipped to them. Put a piece of paper in with your shipped product with and address for an online poll or a site/e-mail where they can tell you how your shipping quality was done. I know some people who ship exotic animals like reptiles and tarantulas and they get better results marking their packages as "fragile" instead of "Live animals". Sometimes postal workers will be surprised and drop a package marked "live"... Good luck.
