Opening Quickbooks - painfully slow

Have 3 computers running Quickbooks Pro 2007. All of the same hardware config and OS version - XP spk2 - fully "patched" as of this posting. Running McAfee Viruscan on all computers. All computers are connected via 10/100 switch - with 100Mbps connectivity confirmed. I have a workgroup "server" which holds the companies quickbooks database which is only 24MB. I can copy the company file from the workgroup server to each of the 3 computers in about 15-20 seconds..(thought this is relevant). On the "working" computer QB opens up fairly quickly, gets to the screen to choose company file, click open and within seconds the file is loaded and the user can do their work. On the other 2 computers it is painfully slow opening QB. For some reason it seems to launch a little bit slower (but nothing glarring) but when you go to open the same company file, it can take 15 minutes for the file to load. NOBODY is using the database at the same time. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program on the two "non working" computers. I have updated the network card drivers, even tried forcing them at 100Mbps/Full duplex mode... nothing. The switch is a linksys 8 port Cable/DSL router. All other file transfers between the computers seems fine. I'm including the qbwin.log file contents QBWINDLL.c (255) : MESSAGE: Sat Jan 12 17:18:12 LVL_ERROR--Returning NULL QBWinInstance Handle QBWINDLL.c (255) : MESSAGE: Sat Jan 12 17:18:12 LVL_ERROR--Returning NULL QBWinInstance Handle QBWINDLL.c (115) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:18:12 CQBWinApp::InitInstance -- Initializing QBWinInstance Handle QBWINDLL.c (145) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:18:12 CQBWinApp::InitInstance completed QBW.c (215) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:18:12 CQuickBooksApp::InitInstance Initializing Quickbooks (AfxOLE) QBW.c (219) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:18:12 Operations Started QBW.c (425) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:18:12 Calling MauiMain for further initialization LicenseUtility.cpp (874) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:18:12 Initializing QBLicense Adapter for version 17 and flavor pro, which will initialize .NET EC if in Handshake Mode DBManager.cpp (3906) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:19:00 Database Server cache size = 64M DBManager.cpp (3908) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:19:00 Database Server initial cache size = 32M DBManager.cpp (3695) : CHECKPOINT: Sat Jan 12 17:19:00 Database Server starting. Just to add another comment... I have tried putting the computers onto different network drops and changing out the network cables - even tried a different switch.

i'm having the EXACT same problem only with 2008 pro. the host computer opens the file almost instantly, yet every networked computer that tries to access it takes close to 5 minutes to open quickbooks to a functioning point. not to mention that whatever the latest update that came out basically killed quickbooks. but that's another topic all together. needless to say, we're not too happy with qb right now.

Had similar issues with Quickbooks running painfully slow over network. Spent hours on the line with tech support going through every setting and feature possible. The problem ended up being caused by the Antivirus software installed on each computer system involved. I had already set permissions for QB to have full rights on the network and firewall but it made little difference. Eventually, I removed the Antivirus program (Webroot) and just reinstalled a different antivirus vendor. Problems solved, the loading time went from 5-10 Minutes down to about 20 Seconds. I hope that this helps somebody out there because I know this info. would have helped me!

Same here. Quickbooks Pro 2008 3-user environment. One PC loads fast, another takes almost 10 minutes to load and it's a new machine. Calling tech support is such an agonizing nightmare... I won't go through that again. Anyone have any ideas?

ok, i fixed my problem. it was my firewall. i am using avg pro on all networked computers that were running quickbooks and there is a built in firewall in avg. luckily i have a hardware firewall, so i just turned off the firewall in avg and it worked like a charm. check your settings in your firewall. i'm sure there's something simple that you have to allow (some port or something)...but i couldn't tell you what exactly it is.

I had already turned off my firewall (windows) and that did not help.

not only is it slow to open, its slow to operate ... its a joke that it takes so long to lock-write-unlock for each transaction. And worse, its slowed down the whole machine .... as long as the database manager is running ...it kills the machine ... and this is NOT a slow machine, and it does have 2G of RAM. This is just plain garbage software that Intuit refuses to acknowledge and repair. If anyone can help us get this drivel to run faster, please let me know ..with thanks !!

I am having same problem. QB Pro 2008 3-user. Host and one client open fast. However 1 client computer takes 5-10 minutes to load DB file. Once loaded can work fine. But when closes one QB company and tries to open another it again takes 5-10 minutes.

I am having the same problem. The company file takes over 5 minutes to open by the Vista PC. The XP PC that hosts the company file opens it fast and so does the other XP PC on the network. It seems to have started after I tried to move the company file from one PC to another. The move wouldn't work so I reverted back to the original setup. That's when the slowdown started.

We had the same problem with Enterprise v7 & v8.
It was traced back to a software conflict.

Haver you tried turning off all software prior to opening the company file? (Examples: spyware, adware, virus scan, etc.)

Can you post all software loaded and running at time of attempting to load the company file?

Did anyone ever solve this problem? I have a multi-user environment with 3 users, 2 on XP and 1 on Vista. The XP users are fine, the Vista user takes several minutes to load QB. The Vista user is running SP1 with all the latest patches.

Doing this worked for me.

Go to the Control panel from Start menu.
Then User accounts and family safety.
Then User accounts and look for Turn user accounts control on or off.
Then Uncheck Use User account control (UAC) to help protect your computer.
and restart the computer.
and after that open quickbooks.

I was able to resolve the issue after attempting several items:

1) Disabling UAC - This did not solve the issue so I kept it enabled

2) Checked hosts file for invalid entries and none existed

3) Ensured that no media players were playing while operating Quickbooks

In the end, what ended up resolving my specific issue was ensuring that QB was in the exceptions list in the Windows Firewall (My file is accessed over a network).

As a test, I would turn off the Firewall on the server and one of the workstations. If that doesn't work, try some of the other methods listed above. Are these Vista PCs?

Okay, same issue. Database being access off of a Win2k8 Server, tried accessing from another server, Quad core, 8GB RAM. The issue only occurs when the database manager is running, if the two service are stopped, and then access the file, it operates lightning fast. Turn on the Database monitor service, evreything slows right down. Hope that helps.
