Would anyone like to share their successful revenue mix? I provide tax preparation, QuickBooks consulting, quarterly payroll prep and some occasional tax representation (I'm an Enrolled Agent, too). For those of you with significant tax season work, how do you fill up the other nine months of the year? I'm at the point where any more monthly/quarterly work that I pick up will significantly reduce my available time during tax season.
During tax season my workload separates 80%-7%-6%-7% between tax, bookkeeping/payroll, teaching, & miscellaneous. During May through December it is more like 44% tax, 20% bookkeeping/payroll, 16% teaching, 10% business consulting & 10% tax rep.
I am a JD, CPA. My teaching is continuing education for accountants and lawyers. I also do minor subcontracting work for a retired CPA during tax season, only about 50 hours worth.
During tax season I have help, about 150 hours worth. Then I only have to review the returns. This year I hope to have someone assemble them, too.
Also, about 60% of my working hours are spent in the first third of the year, while the remainder is spent over the last two thirds, due to tax season, of course.
