NY Preparers - Beware that NY extensions with balances due must be paid by direct debit.

Hey all you NY preparers! NY is requiring E-payment for all NY EXTENSIONS with a balance due.

The following is from the NY Tax website FAQ's

>What are the payment options on an e-file extension?

If tax software is used to e-file an extension, the only payment option is direct debit.

The bank routing number and account number should be entered into the tax software, and the payment information will be transmitted along with the extension data. The payment can be “post-dated” to a date up to and including the due date of the return. We will only debit the account for the amount authorized.<

This is will require major time to get the bank info, explain the mandate to clients, and be sure you cover you a** if the direct debit doesnt happen for reasons beyond your control.

I think most of us have gone through this already with the LLC filing requirement this past Janaury. I have had surprisingly little resistance from clients - even with the sharp increase in the fees most of them are paying.

Same here, but business clients are very different from individuals. The NY IT204LL was a nightmare.

What? You're not allowed to send New York a paper extension with a paper check? I don't understand. (My gut reaction would be, however, that if that's really true, then NY can wait a long time for its money. If they don't want a check, they'll never get the money. They should be grateful that somebody is sending them money in any way, shape or form. If it came in the form of currency, in pennies, they should take it. If they don't, then they shouldn't complain that the state coffers are bare. Just my 2 cents.)

Back up before it's too late. For a professional answer, call Tech Support at 1-800-933-9999 (Lacerte)(other numbers ProSeries, QB, or TurboTax). I am a volunteer, not compensated or supported by Intuit.

It is my understanding from reading the NYSSCPA newsletter and the E-file FAQ section of the NYS DTF website. NYS is pushing the work down to the preparers and there is a lot of exposure on our parts if the payment doesnt get made somehow. Be aware, some individuals have blocks on their checking accounts to prevent any direct debits. Those clients will need to change their banking agreements or opt out of efiling altogether. I hope the preparer community raises its fees for this extra responsibility.
