NON-TRANSFER OF PRIOR YEAR TURBOTAX STATE INFORMATION TO PROSERIES

ProSeries

Does anyone know why state items like my 2010 state refund and 2010 estimate paid in 2011 are not transferring into proseries? These should be automatic and didi not transfer like the federal items did?

 State refund should have transfered.

Estimated payments don't transfer - they are merely suggestions.

All those items should transfer over as you mentioned.  Are you first year Proseries?  Did you go into 2010 Proseries client file and access state on each client?  But as long as all info is in 2010 return they transfer just fine.  Debi, I am not sure what you mean by just a suggestion?

Just because we calculate ES payments doesn't mean that the client actually paid them.  I've had clients change the amount on one payment or another and not send one or two.  I don't want the program carrying over what I prepared the prior year.  I'll get that information from them directly at the appt.

Correct Tilt, that is what I meant.

However, if I enter the Jan 2011 pmt in the 2010 program, it generally transfers to the 2011 program.

OK, you are talking about 2011 estimates.  I think unhappys question is about 2010 last estimate paid in January 2011.  That should carry over because it is used on 2010 return as an actual payment not a suggestion.  I get the confusion now.

Transferring from TurboTax to Pro Series only transfers the federal information.  Process should go something like this:

1) TT-2010 to PS-2010

2) Open PS-2010 and verify the numbers (it's not a perfect match)

3) Create the state return(s)

4) Save

5) PS-2010 to PS-2011

This is the part that most TT to PS users don't do:

3) Create the state return(s)

PS treats the state software like another program, so merely opening a federal return(and apparently merely transferring a federal return) will not create the info on a state return. You can have a federal and not a state.

You have to open a state PS return to create the tax due or tax refund to be transferred into the 2011 PS file. This is my guess as to the whyfore of this issue.

And, since the now former TT users could not have possibly sold their tax prep services to more than 5 paying customers in 2010 it cannot possibly take too much time to do the procedures that Rick provides. (I hope my sarcasm font came through).

We found that when you transfer files in bulk, the state refund isn't coming over to 2011.  When we do the returns individually, the information transfers over.  In the past, if we transferred the files before the state return was available, we had this problem.  We just tried deleting and reimporting, and the information still won't import in bulk.
