Non-standard W-2's and e-file issues

If a client has had a typed W-2 in the past but this year the same employer gave him a hand written W-2- will it mess up e-file if I mark the box "non-standard" and e-file it-- I don't want it to kick out because his employer got lazy this year.

As long it is on a normal W-2 form, the fact that it is hand written does not make it a non standard W-2.

I was looking at line 13c on the ProSeries W-2 imput screen- it says handwritten, typed or altered so I was concerned that I needed to mark that box for this client--- I would rather submit as always, as if it was normal. What do you think about the meaning of that imput line for e-filing?

If the w-2 is handwritten I always check the box, have never had an inquiry after doing this.

If anything, the IRS probably checks those first, against what is reported when doing the

reconciliation.

I tried paying my taxes with a smile, they wanted money....Maxine

Believe it or not, not every business issues W-2s printed off computers so handwritten W-2s are not real common but they do show up. I have seen my fair share over the years, so as long as it is properly prepared on a normal W-2 form you won't have any problems treating it as a regular W-2.

I don't think this cause a problem on E filing. Send it marked correctly and see what happens.

If you can find Part V of the W-2 worksheet, then Line 13 C should be marked. (In the middle box) it has Non Standard W-2 (handwritten, typewritten or altered in any way). I think it is only correct to mark it this way, and thank ProSeries for explaining what is a non standard W-2.

Tax Act will not let you use non-standard w-2's - my daughter has a hand written one and her tax submission was rejected.

How nice of you to take the time to answer a 4 year old post.  But I don't think they're too concerned about efiling that return right now.
