i am a complete newbie to this - so forgive me if I sound dumb .. I have put in my opening balance and date - and now I want to enter the transactions from my bank statement. For places like KFC, Woolworths, Coles do I enter them as owner drawings?

owner drawing is when you take money out for personal use.
other wise you use an expense account or an asset account
QB is an accounting program and has a steep learning curve regardless of what the PR says.

The help files and video tutorials are helpful. QuickBooks for Dummies, and Business Accounting for Dummies are great books.
There is also a lot of information on my blog, and several "How 2" articles on the basics.
