New sales tax feature

We recently released a new sales tax center that will make it easier to work with sales tax.  I've seen some questions recently about this new feature so I wanted to provide you with a few resources available to help you become familiar with it.

Blog article with examples of setting up rates:

blog.qbo.intuit.com/2012/10/18/new-and-improved-sales-tax-with-multiple-tax-items-and-better-reporting/

Youtube video with an overview of the new feature:

BOY YOU GUYS REALLY SCREWED UP!  In your sales tax "upgrade" you effectively DELETED the sales tax status of my entire client list!  Not only can I not tell who is taxable and who isn't (other than printing a report) - I have no way of changing them back!

After talking to one of your customer service reps, I can't set a clients tax status until the next time I invoice them  ARE YOU KIDDING ME???   I set the tax status when I set up the client, not when I'm invoicing them.   My invoicing person doesn't know if they are taxable or not.

YOU HAVE TAKEN AWAY ALL MY TAX STATUS HISTORY AND MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO RESTORE IT EXCEPT ONE INVOICE AT A TIME.  ARE YOU CRAZY?

First rule: DO NO HARM!  The new capabilities may be great, but what moron thought it was a good idea to delete the previous method???  And finally, the puny notice I got hardly let me know the catastrophe that just happened here.

I have been with QBO for over 2 years.  I haven't always liked everything, but NEVER have you made such a colossal blunder as this.

You guys messed with my data.  That is unforgivable.

You're able to run a report to see the sales tax status as you mentioned.  I've included a link with the steps for this report for others that might need it.

I also wanted to let you know we've heard you're feedback and our engineers are looking into the ability to mark customers as non-taxable.  I'll have more information on this soon.

You have also completely screwed up my sales tax payable. On all invoices before Nov 1, QBO automatically CHANGED my sales receipts sales tax to "Original Sales Tax" and everyuthing after Nov. 1 to sales tax payable - TWO entries on the chart of accounts and no way to make them one. So I have to open each of my over 1500 sales receipts for October and manually CHANGE to the new sales tax payable. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? Who is going to pay for my time to do this?????? I report quarterly and last I looked Oct/Nov/Dec are in the 4th quarter. How could you do this without warning? Plus I CANNOT set my sales receipt preferences to include sales tax. It has to be clicked on for each transaction, I have several employees that must manually check this off EVERY TIME. Please tell me there is a fix to this nightmare.

I'm sorry for the frustration this has caused.  Here's some information about the feature that will hopefully help.  Instead of changing all the old transactions you can use the old payment method to pay the amount.

  • Make both old and new sales tax payments: You might need to pay sales tax using both methods for a time:
    • Existing transactions with earlier sales tax method: Record sales tax payments as you have in the past (using Write Check or adding a payment directly to the register).
    • New transactions with new tax rates in the Sales Tax Center: Pay sales tax from the Sales Tax Center using the Record Tax Payment button.

Over time, you should have fewer transactions that use the earlier tax rate, and then fewer tax payments to record with the earlier method.

The sales tax field will be blank for each customer on the first transaction you create.  Once you've selected the rate for a customer on a new transaction it will become sticky and pull up on the next transaction for that customer.

I hope you have a great day!

Sherrie,

You said "The sales tax field will be blank for each customer on the first transaction you create."

Now that QBO has removed the client's tax status, how is my invoicing person supposed to know if this client is taxable or not?  I do business-to-business billings - many of my clients are resale exempt.  This information was stored and controlled at the client level by me at the time the client is set up.  Now, I have had to print a report and have my invoicing person check this printed report every time he does an invoice to determine whether to apply sales tax or not.  Since many of my clients are not regular, I will have to keep this printed report and check it for at least 2 years before I will get the sales tax rate set for most of my clients.

QBO needs to fix this ASAP.  You have tripled my work load.  I am not a happy customer!

That sounds all well and good, however, I pay my sales tax online by quarter. I do not write a check. Plus my bank account is linked to QB Online. So I have to make ONE payment to the tax agency. I cannot record two transactions in the register and try to match it to my one payment to the tax agency. They need to let me merge the two sales tax accounts into one new one. This is really going to be a problem for me. Plus evertime I start a new sales receipt, we have to specifically click on sales tax. What if we don't necessarily put a name on the invoice. I have a lot of walk in customers, so I cannot generate a new customer record for each one. Sometimes people are five or six deep in line. No time to create customer records, just enter sales tickets. What if my salespeople forget to click the sales tax box. Then I am stuck LOSING that money - cause it still has to be paid. Please just let me have the universal setting option back for ALL customers are charged sales tax. I am sure there are far more quickbooks customers who have just one sales tax rate than all the multiple rate customers combined.

I'm with you.  I file and pay online.  It was so easy to just match the downloaded bank data to Sales Tax Payable. Done.  Intuit has created extra work and a real mess here.

I have tax exempt customers.  Having a button for this customer is taxable or leaving it blank for non-taxable was so easy.

And the "new improved reports" still do nothing I need to report to the State. Has anyone on the development team ever run a small business?  Has anyone on the development team ever actually filed a state sales tax form?  Probably not - their choices would be different.

How do I Change customers to "Taxable"? We have had tons of invoices go through untaxed that should have been taxable. Now we must check each invoice before printing. As for estimates, we change them too but they revert back to no tax on the next estimate. I hope you can get this fixed soon!!!!!

Please do as I'm doing - contact QBO every way possible and spread the word.  This is more than just a bad upgrade, it shows carelessness and a disregard for data that we all worked hard to input.  Our outrage needs to ring far and wide.

We are royally screwed by this update. We run our sales through a restaurant POS system that calculates and collects taxes. Since their is no link between the systems I make manual sales receipts in batches (one per revenue center). Not only does that means I normally mix taxable and non-taxable customers on the same receipt (I can change that although that just adds work for me for no gain ... thanks!). Much worse is the fact that the calculations done by the POS on each and every transactions sums to a different number than what QBO calculates on the aggregate transaction (rounding problems I assume). Sure, I could make a correcting journal entry each time, but that doesn't make me very happy. Actually, my short term solution is to record each receipt without any tax and then make a journal entry for the full tax amount. I just hope QBO will let me.

Anyway, your fancy new update broke my workflow and, no matter how we slice it, made it worse. Please reinstate an option to enter the tax collected manually for those that record their sales in a different, non-connected, system. Now. Well, at least tomorrow.

Amen EE!  Please send Feedback and call them, too.  They need to drop everything else they are doing and work around the clock on this.  Makes you wonder if they have any QC at all!

Please change this back. It was fine before. It's midnight for me right now and I'm having to sort through all of this. So F---ing unnessesary. Now I have customers who were not charged sales tax because my associates did not know they had to change the sales tax button. Thanks a lot!

I apologize for the frustration this has caused.  We are currently working to get more information out there to help understand the new feature better.  We are also looking at the feedback that is coming in.  Please submit feedback by clicking on the yellow Feedback button at the top right of the Sales Tax Center.  Our engineers are currently working on solutions for things that have been brought up through feedback.  For instance, we are working on adding a taxable flag for customers.

I wanted to share our recent blog post in regards to the changes that will be coming soon to sales tax.  We've listened to your feedback and continue to listen to your feedback.  Here's some information on the changes you can expect to see based on the feedback we've received.
