New HST Setup Tool in QB2010

The latest R4 product update for QB2010 includes the new setup tool which allow customers in BC and Ontario to setup HST fast and efficiently.

This tool is available in all 2010 EasyStart, Pro, Premier and Enterprise editions.

If you have automatic updates enabled, you will get the update automatically.  If you wish, you can also download the R4 update manually from here.

Please give me some additional information here, before things potentially get messed up. We are in Ontario and need to continue charging and remitting the 8% PST to the Province on Insurance Premiums. Will this update "mess up" the prior PST setings, or will it just add the ability to select HST for certain Items where applicable?? Please advise.

Hello yarddog,

Installing R4 will not overwrite or automatically change anything in your current company file. It does, however, "add" new features to QuickBooks to help guide you through the changes you need to make for the new HST.

So, go ahead and install R4, then use the HST Setup Tool to add the new HST items and codes (step 1) if you need to start charging HST now. Then, when July 1 comes, complete step 2 and 3 in the HST Setup Tool. These steps will change your default sales tax preference to HST; and your items, customers & vendors, and accounts in one fell swoop.

If you don't need to start charging HST until July 1... after you install R4, when QuickBooks pops up a message asking if you want to make the HST change now, click the "Create an Alert" button. Hope this helps.

-cheers

Hi Tracey,

Client upgrade R4. They don't need to change HST now. They just closed the windows and WITHOUT "create an alert".

Is it possible to open this update window and create an alert again.

Thanks

Hi Tracey_Intuit ...

Since we will need to continue charging and remitting PST (even after July 1st.) and only one Item needs to be changed to HST - it sounds like we should do step 1. only, and never do steps 2. and 3. as we don't want to "change our default sales tax preferences to HST; and our items, customers & vendors, and accounts" in one swell foop or otherwise.

Can you confirm, that if we only do step 1., that all the HST remitting procedures and accounts will be created and all PST remitting procedures and accounts will remain.

 Hello William,

If the client closes the windows without creating an alert, then they can create an alert from the HST Setup Tool.

To open the the HST Setup Tool, go to the Sales Tax menu, select Manage Sales Tax, then click the Change Tax Setup button. You'll see a new HST option at the bottom. Select it to open the tool. Then your client can opt to create an alert for themselves.

Good morning Yarddog,

Ok, I've double-checked with the Engineers...

During the transitional period, we understand that you will have to track and remit GST, PST and now HST so the HST Setup Tool was designed with that in mind. Therefore, in answer to your specific question, whether you do step 1 or all the steps in the HST tool

  • your existing GST & PST tracking will remain the same (aka the tool will NOT touch it)
  • HST codes & sales tax items are created in step 1
  • HST tracking & remittance is automatically taken care because it is tracked in the same tax agency (receiver general) as GST. So, when you go to remit your sales tax, the amounts will include any GST you charged along with HST

Thanks for your question. Hope I answered it!

-cheers

Should a user who will not exceed the $30,000 threshold and is not registered for the GST, only the PST, still update to R4.  Will they have an option on July 1st to not charge any taxes if they update?

Thanks

Why do I make things seem so difficult .....

Hello pabsl, you still need to update QuickBooks 2010 to R4. Remember, that gst and pst, for the most part go away and are being replaced with the harmonized sales tax (HST).  The R4 update creates the HST sales items and codes that you'll need to start using for your transactions on July 1.

The HST option is not in my manage sales tax at all.  I have Quickbooks 2010 Pro and am running R4, but still nothing.  I have tried clicking on add sales tax for BC and still nothing.  Any suggestions?

I have uploaded the latest R4 for 2010 with payroll.  I do not have the HST setup tool.  The Help menu advised that there is to be a button to click for Set up of HST for BC but I cannot locate this.  Please help.  HST is close and in some cases is here now.

I called support as no one was getting back to me.  Apparently has to do with your screen resolution, go to Edit Menu, click on Preferences, on left menu click Desktop View in the pop up screen, click on `Display under the Windows Settings, on the next pop up window choose make text larger or smaller, and choose smaller.  Your computer will prompt you to log off.  Do this and then log on, open Quickbooks, go back into the manage sales tax and it will be there.

Apparently, they do not have a scroll option in this window, and once you have done the HST changes, you can go back to a screen res you can read.

Hope this helps, only took me a week of trying different things, and 15 minutes with support to find it out.  Hope this makes into their FAQ!!

this is a repeat of my previous issue. i am running 2010 premier accountant  edition with R4 update (on Windows 7 OS). when in  sales tax code setup wizard the 5th bullet reads "set up HST for British Columbia and/or Ontario:" but it is greyed out and i can't select it to use the wizard to add the new HST. i am in Manitoba but have business activity in Ontario & BC. i don't think it is a windows 7 issue as i tried to set the new codes up on my desktop which is running XP, same result??

why can i not select the set up option?

Hi astro1945

You do not need to use that option. Pick the first option Create Provincial Taxes. Click Finish. Choose the Province you want to add and click OK. This will then create the H code for the Province you selected. The HST setup tool is designed specifically for those companies operating in BC and Ontario which help them update their Customer, Vendor, Items and Accounts default tax codes.

The HST set up tool  option is not available in the sales tax setup area.  I have tried using tduze's suggestion of how to deal with the inability to scroll down far enough to get the HST set up tool.

I understood this suggestion to be in QB but I am now wondering if it was in Windows that tduze was talking about.  Either way I am still unable to reach this too.  Can anyone help me.

Does Quickbooks have a step by step "HOW TO" list of the steps necessary to take in QB to do the HST set up for BC?  If so where can I locate this.
