Network Manager, Fixed Asset Manager, etc

ProSeries : 2008

Are the Proseries Add-ons worth it?

Right now they are offering add-ons such as network manager, fixed asset manager, etc for deeply discounted prices. I'm thinking this might be a good time for me to take advantage of these tools as well as DMS, Organizers if it's worth it.

I have 3 computers in the office, but my understanding was I did not need to purchase the network manager. Also, what's the point of the fixed asset manager? Does it do anything you can't do with the QB FAM and Proseries tax software?

Thanks again for the input.

When it comes to add-ons, I think you should feel the need, first. Over the years I've spent too much money on things I thought I would need, before I needed them, and needed to buy an upgrade before the first even paid for itself.

If you handle a lot of new accounts, requiring a lot of new entering of assets, then the fixed asset manager may save you a lot of time. In ProSeries, once you have entered the first asset list, the assets will carry forward every year, and disposing of some and adding a few new ones is easy. In fact, I have several ProSeries files that are not for use doing taxes since the income taxes are done on other systems. But I use ProSeries to give me the annual depreciation and lifetime depreciation listings, which I add to the accounting record and post from. It is far easier than the old paper and calculator ledgers, so prone to a variety of errors throughout the years.

When it comes to a Document Management System, I am more skeptical about using it - I've been using another version since before Intuit came up with one, and it handles multiple functions for me. Intuit DMS is a good program although I see complaints often - a decent training interval will handle that. I hear even more complaints about non Intuit DMS's which are very expensive - and the fundamental issues are the same. If you feel the need to implement a DMS system then Intuit's is good.

That said - the foundation of DMS is computer housekeeping - creating a filing system for all the documentation you want to keep, and a system for getting it into the computer, and a system for backing it up, and a system for requiring that everybody always do it the same way so the information can be identified and used by others. From my perspective the last reason is the first reason to implement a formal system - to make everyone do it.

Thanks for the feedback. I will not be buying all of these add-ons, because like you said, sometimes you buy things you think you will need and don't really end up needing them. But I think I can benefit from one or two of them.

I currently use Paperport and think Intuit DMS would be much better so I'm almost convinced on that one at the $200 price. I will probably try the organizers on a PPR basis for now.

However, the network manager is what I would really be interested in finding out more about. What's the advantage to having that?

Thanks Nancea, I was wondering if I might be missing out on something... apparently not. Appreciate the insight.

I'd rather be flying........

Sorry, I haven't used it - there's always been IT staff for that. From past experience, it may save whoever handles the IT significant hair pulling but I honestly don't know.

Gotta love Intuit. They said these prices on the add ons were good through January. But the Network Solutions no longer has the lower price listed. I guess they included it in the special by mistake..lol.

After finally getting a hold of someone that knew about networking Proseries, I realized I do need to buy it.
