Multiple sales tax rates on different items on same invoice - QB Pro 2011

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

We have to charge different sales tax rates for different items (ie. daily cottage rentals get state sales tax plus county hotel tax, weekly cottage rentals county hotel tax only, boat rentals sales tax only), often on the same invoice. PLS HELP!

Hi Rustler,  Thx for yr reply.  I actually have already figured out how to handle the weekly vs daily cottage rentals and hotel tax.  My problem is when I throw in a boat rental that only gets sales tax.  I haven't figured out how to make the invoice show 2 different tax rates for the two separate items. I can choose tax codes by line item, but the invoice only totals sales tax using a single code by customer (?).  If I have 2 different items w/ 2 different tax codes, the invoice is always wrong.  I end up having to do 2 separate invoices - one for each item. Very inconvenient for our customers.

You can assign a different sales tax code for each line in an invoice. You can also set up tax codes to combine different taxes.  Sales tax menu > Sales tax code list > Ctrl + N

If answered, Click This solved my question. Thanks!

Hi Chip, Thx for yr response.  I already choose different codes by line item.  The problem is on the invoice it allows/pre-selects only one tax code per customer and calcs the total based on that instead of the appropriate line item sales tax.

Sounds strange, cause I just tried it in my pro 2011, and it worked to choose many different codes in one invoice. Listed them all separately on the invoice ???? Hope someone else knows about such. Good luck!

Hope this helps! If this answers your question, please click This solved my question, if not please ask more questions. Thankyou!

Eureka!  After many hours of dinking around, I finally just tricked the Invoice screen and print form by creating a 0% Sales Tax Item to use on the default Sales Tax field on the Invoice screen, and making it invisible by going to the Layout Designer, on the footer checking the Print box for the Sales Tax field and deleting the text box and border for that field, as well as changing the font color to white so it wouldn't automatically show a $0.00 line item on my printed invoices.  Now I enter my item, enter the appropriate sales tax item under it.  Skip a line.  Enter my next item, and enter it's appropriate sales tax item under it (all seems to be calculating and totaling correctly).  If I have multiple items at the same sales tax rate I added a subtotal item that can be inserted under the grouped items and then add the appropriate sales tax item under the subtotal.  Seems like a ridiculous amount of work for something that apples to a whole industry in my state (NY).  I suppose there's probably an easier solution if I buy a more expensive version? You would think there would be an option in the setup to allow for multiple sales tax items by product on one invoice and omitting the additional default application/calculation of a single sales tax rate (item) to the invoice total.

Can you help me with this.  I'm not understanding your instructions.  I also live in NY and have an embroidery business.  So items I sell are at 4% and digitizing is at 8% and I can't seem to figure out how to do this in simple start.

Please email me if you want to [removed]

Thanks,

Tracee
