mesage "accounts cannot be null"

Some additional information about the steps you are performing would be helpful. Are you talking about choosing the default accountfor Make Deposits in the Preferences dialog box? Then, where are you setting the fee expense account?

Author, QuickBooks 2009: The Missing Manual

This error was occurring in the Record Merchant Service Deposits and Fees window. I edited the account name in the Chart of Accounts by deleting the hyphen in the checking account name, saving it, then reinserting it and saving it. That seemed to provide me a different list of Expense Accounts for Recording Fees from which to choose. Now it appears to be working properly.

We have the same problem and have never been able to find a fix for it. Nothing we try works, including every solution on the forum.

P.S. We have even talked at length with a technical person at Intuit. He spent an hour with me on my computer. He gave a fix, but it only lasted a day. Someone please help!

Same here I spent more than an hour and I spoke with 3 different representatives or tech guys, I had to explain the same story to one and to the other one and the other one.  "Let me transfer you to someone that can assist you with that", you are calling  XXXX Department and you should be talking to YYYY Department but I will gladly connect you.  YYYY Department  "Let me transfer you to someone that can assist you with that", you are calling ZZZZ Department and you should be talking to XXXX Department but I will gladly connect you."

This issue has been seen to happen when changing the preference in QuickBooks to "show lowest sub accounts only".

Try this:  In QuickBooks

Edit/Preferences/Accounting/Company Preferences

Clear the selection that says "show lowest sub accounts only"

You should now be able to record the deposit without getting error message

 This happened to me after changing the name of my checking account.  Here's what I did to resolve it:

1. Opened Merchant Service record deposits window
2. Changed the bank account from my checking account (the account that gave me the cannot be null error) to my savings account (I would think a temporary bank account would work too)
3. Saved the settings with the alternate bank account as the merchant deposit account
4. Reopen the account settings and change it back to the checking account (in my case, the new checking account name)
