Make sure the Massachusetts information worksheet has the box checked for some variety of Form 1 NR/PY. If defaults to Form 1, the resident form.

It was late and I was tired and had just spent 30 tech support. minutes with tech support. The whole story is that the return is a PY/NR, Part Year/Non Resident. The situation is a rare one, the couple got married in September. For all of 2009, the husband lived in NH. The wife worked in Mass until Aug 31 and moved to NH when she got married. The software is apparently assuming that the husband lived in Mass for the first part of the year. I completed Part X of the federal return that indicates each spouses residency time periods. Sine she lived in Mass for 8 months she needs to provide proof of med coverage. the husband does not. Without fixing this, I cannot efile.

I had one of those last year which I somehow managed to trick Proseries into efiling.

Depends on your states, you have to have something that will file independent of the fed and your state forms have to allow mixed full year/part year filing on the same form.  What I ended up doing is filing the MFJ "end of year" state w/the federal and waiting for the ack.  Then I moved the data file somewhere else to avoid the "duplicate SSN error."  Started a new data file for the MFS spouse who moved out of "beginning of year" state and then efiled that by itself.  When the ack comes back and attaches itself to the data file you can move the original file back to your regular directory.  You'll get a duplicate SSN error but since everything has already been filed it's not a problem.

Now Lisa's going to yell at me and tell you all the reasons you shouldn't do this! :)

Rick
