Land Surveying business and data base management

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

Has anyone been successful in using QuickBooks with a Land Surveying business?  My client uses QB for payroll but that is it.   I would like to get them to use the whole software and wonder if anyone else out there has a Land Surveying client that they use QB software for.

THANKS

Land Surveying is not an unusual service industry and there are a lot of basic tools in QB that work for this business.

For instance, Items is what we make, do, sell, charge, buy, or buy and sell. Your client can be using Items, for good pricing and reporting and for clarity when charging clients.

Customer data is where you track the information regarding the customer. Job Tracking would be used for the specific property, including legal info.

Timesheets is where you track tasks and the Service Items performed for specific jobs (property).

All of this is seen in the video tutorials: Help menu > Learning Center.

Also, the sample files for construction are similar operations for surveyor needs. Both business models require Job Tracking.

I have only worked with QB's at the wholesale level.  I am clueless how to set up a surveying company in QB.  I know what I want it to do but do not know how to since the rates vary from client to client.  Do you set up boundary's, topo's, and etc. under items?  How and where do you set up charges for RPLS, CAD, and etc?

I would appreciate some guidance or where to find  information to get me started in the right direction

Thank you..

Your item list will be anything the firm quotes, sells, offers.

When rates vary, you would like using Estimates. You set up the items with price of $0. Using an estimate is how you document the specific scope of work and prices quoted. Then you invoice from the Estimate for Progress invoicing.

Or you use a Sales Order and invoice from the Sales Order, when you need to manage Qty changes.

Or, you invoice for Acual time and costs. That comes from marking the job related data entries as Billable to the customer for the job.
