#KeyLearning - Site Error 404

The SiteError404 page is page that was created by default in your account for instances where there is a broken link on your website. So, if a visitor types a page name incorrectly or clicks a link to a page that no longer exists in your site, this error page is displayed.
When you are viewing your published site and click on a link that takes you to the SiteError404 page, you will need to check a few things in order to fix the problem:

Make sure the link is connected to the correct page/file name.

1. Launch Sitebuilder

2. If the broken link is in your Navigation Element, click on the Navigation Element on your page, then the Links tab in the Properties Editor. From there you will see a list of your links. Click on the one that is having problems, then hit Edit Link

If the broken link is a standard text box/image, highlight the text box/image, and then click on Link

3. The Link Window will appear. Make sure that it the page or file that is associated with the link is the correct file name. If not, click on Browse to search through your File Manager to find the correct page/file.

4. Click OK

5. Save and Publish

Make sure the page/file that the link is connected to is published.

1. Open your File Manger (File > File Manager)

2. Scroll down to find the page that the link is supposed to be connected to and check the column Status.

3. If the Status says, “OK”, then you are fine. If the Status reads, “!Upload”, select the file, then click the Upload button to publish that page.

Hope that helps!

Aubrey T.

Ok so I'm guessing that I have to leave the Site Error page where it is.  Does this page count as one of my 5 pages?

I have not posted my website yet.  When I preview I'm not seeing a page.  It's also title Blank and has not changed to what I renamed it.

The Site Error 404 page does NOT count towards your page count, so you can have 5 pages on top of the SiteError page.

Regarding the missing page, did you add it to your Navigation menu? If you're still having problems, please let me know. Also, what's the URL to your site, so I can further investigate?

Hi Aubrey.

My Site Error 404 page just appeared and since then, I cannot republish my site.  I get a message telling me that I am now over my page limit and that I need to upgrade.  If the site error 404 page does not count, then I should be fine on my page count.....help!

Eric

Hi emandrews32 -

You may have another page in your file manager that you are not aware of counting towards your page limit.

To check:
Launch Sitebuilder Plus > Click on the dropdown arrow next to your site name > Click "View File Manager"

From there, click on "Sort By Type" to organize your files and you can then see how many HS Web Pages you have.

You can delete unwanted pages from there.

Hope that helps! If not, what's your website URL so I can check for you?

This is interesting, but does not seem to address the issue of getting the 404 error every time a correction is made, then saved, then published to ANY page in two sites. Just a few works adjusted in a sentence of text, or correction of a misspelled word. IN EVERY CASE that 404 - file or directory not found comes up (no matter whether the page adjusted is viewed or not.. it is ALWAYS there ... and has been since the recnt "upgrade" of site builder.

IN every case it's necessary to go out and come back in to access sitebuilder. To verify that the 404 error is an ERROR IN YOUR SYSTEM, I can immediately open the published web site with a different browser than FireFox and all the links work CORRECTLY... there is just something in the save/publish process that is goofing up..

I have the site error 404 issue.  Where do I find the "navigation element" that you are referring to?  I am really stumped on this.

Hi Aubrey, I deleted a page and now get this error. I am just building the site, so I haven't seen it published yet, but the deleted page with the error shows on my home page. Will this be resolved when i publish? thanks!

Hi howdypearland -

I'm sorry - I just now saw this reply.  Were you able to resolve your problem? It sounds like you'll need to delete the link to the page you deleted on your home page. If you need help with this, please let me know!

Aubrey.. the suggestions do not seem to apply to the situation I posted. There are NO errors for a visitor TO THE SITE.  NONE. All links are operative and work.

The problem is that when IN SITE BUILDER and any correction or change is made, as small as changing one letter in a misspelt word the 404 error comes  up. Thishas been consistent since the latest upgrade. Based on working with link errors in FreewayExpress, I see no parallel to the idea that missing links are the cause... it that is the situation it HAS to be in the way your software is handling a typo error correction.... like backspace, type in the correct letter;   Or replace one image with a new one, or shift an item on a page; or ANY CHANGE OF ANY KIND to any page, any item. that is always this:

404 - File or directory not found.

The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

===== that occurs on  on every change, on every new or replacement item; yet publishing says all items are correct, and when I view it on line in a different browser (leaving firefox open at Intuit site manager) the change has been made and everything works correctly ON my web site.

Hi Jake930 -

Usually the 404 Site Error page message shows up when a link is broken, but in your case, it sounds like something else is going on.

Is it still happening every time you pubilsh? If so, please try clearing your cache to see if that helps.

http://community.intuit.com/po...

If it doesn't, please reply back with a screenshot of what you see, along with the URL to your website, so I can see what's going on.

http://community.intuit.com/po...

Thanks!

This has no meaning.... What Navigation Element... I see nothing by that name; can find no such wording on sitebuilder. Where is it hiding?

Aubrey... could it be the missing link is due to the fact the 'contact' page has been renamed to "Every Man" ?  and it's linked to contact, but the word contact still shows and I find no way to alter it.

Thanks for providing your link.  That is exactly it!

The "Every Man" Navigation Link on your Menu, is linking to a page called "everyman.html" -- however, you do not have a page with this name.  I believe the page is still titled contact.html.  Is this the page you want to associate with the "Every Man" link? http://www.jakesbarbershop.com...

If so, you just need to edit the link to go to the "contact" page instead of the "EveryMan" page.  To do this, select "Every Man" in Sitebuilder, click on the "links" tab, highlight "Every Man", then click on "Edit LInk".

From there, you can click on Browse and choose the correct page.

Save and publish.

Yes, the  link was Contact until a few hours ago when I changed it to see if it would help. So following your latest I went back and changed the link to Contact. I also verified that all other pages have correct link.   Then I verified it all worked in a different browser; then back to Firefox and from the Site Builder I had it publish the entire site.

STILL get same 404 error box with all links correct.

So what' s next?

Also what's the url to ftp my own web site creation in a different software?

The link actually works for me now, you may need to refresh or clear your browser's cache in case it's still linking to the old link.

Regarding FTP, we no longer allow FTP access, so unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to upload your files using FTP.  You will have to import the files by going into the File Manager and clicking "Import" instead.
