IS IT POSSIBLE TO ROLL BACK UPDATES?

Since Lacerte has seen fit to make the end users the Quality Assurance Department and Support Department this year, I would like to know if anyone knows how to rollback updates that this fine program makes for version updates. Since we now have this "new and improved" update feature, can updates be undone??? If anyone knows how, please advise. Thanks.

I don't know, but I guess one could do the following:

Uninstall Lacerte as a whole.

Go back to CD 5 and install it.

Live with whatever was on CD 5 without updates past that point.

OR:

Maybe if you have backups of the program just prior to the most recent update (for example, if you liked the update that occurred around 3/23/07 but you can't stand the update that occurred around 3/30/07) perhaps you could copy the 3/23 program as you had it on your backup, over the same files on your hard disk. I don't know if that "cure" is worse than the "disease," though.

OR:

If you have 2 computers, and you update ONE of them and test to see how good or bad the program is after the update, and you don't like the update, just use the OTHER computer and not the first one.

Maybe a techie knows how to undo an update to get back to the just-prior update, but I'm only making some guesses here.

Sincerely,

Amy

There is no way to "rollback" to a previous version, short of just reverting back to the last CD. Is there a specific problem you are having with the most recent version?

Can you export the updates and then force import them, or does it just look at the numbers and recognize you are trying to install an older version?

If the latter, is the internal catalog of what version is installed somewhere useful like a cleartext file or registry key?

In the c:lacerte6tax subdirectory, there is a file called Versions.W6.

I don't know what would happen if you edited that file to remove one or more of the programs and its date, but at least you could see from that file what program has what date.

I have noticed that every so often I've wound up with states I no longer need, or, say, the "Exempt Org" program which I've never wanted, and I wipe out their whole subdirectories and what's in them, then go to Versions.W6 and delete the lines referring to those programs. I'll still have a so-called reference to those programs, with a blank date, not that I know if my experiences are any help to you, but I thought I'd mention what I know about the Versions file.

Sincerely,

Amy

The reason I wanted to know is that with the March 30th 2007 update, we broke our ability to e-file returns. See my post about it being broken for Schedule F returns.

While I realize it is now fixed, my point remains the same: If we are going to be getting partially tested updates that are thrown out there, give us the ability to remove the most recent update and roll back to a prior version.

Anybody that has had any fun with a change effecting in process e-file returns such as this situation knows what I am talking about: E-file of client orignial return. update made and installed on computer . Return that was e-file rejected by IRS. Attempt to resubmit made now won't work due to changes in e-file software as part of update patch. This happened to us last year and this year.

Sounds awful. You should probably keep one computer purposely on an "old" version, just to avoid such nightmares! Other than that, who knows if there are other programs out there where it's possible to roll back to an old version in the event of a glitch on the new version?

I would suspect that with the hectic pace of tax season, lots of programs have a problem of a patch in one place creating a problem in another place. I suspect it's not just Lacerte, not just Intuit.

Sincerely,

Amy

A quick thought while passing through looking for something else: you should be able to revert Lacerte by restoring from backup or VSS-prior version if hosted on a network drive. Just make sure not to revert the client data directories.

I agree, people expect everything and want to pay nothing. I hate the automatic updates but I have forgotten how much i hated paying a staff member to wander around the firm all day and install updates by CD. You sound like the client that is never satisfied. Relax, you will live longer. I cannot imagine making every update work for every state on the short notice they get during tax season. It is just tough and it isn't unreasonable to think you would have to download a patch every time.
