IRS rejects E-File with ITIN. MFJ, spouse has ITIN

Can ProSeries e-File returns where the spouse has an ITIN? Upon my attempts using Basic i received Error Code 0503: "Secondary taxpayer's Social Security number and last name do not match IRS records."I verified the spelling of the name with the ITIN Notice letter from IRS so i know it's not a misspelling. Are ITINs allowed for spouses when e-filing or do i have to do it the old fashioned way...by mail? I'm using Basic, so if it's not allowed on Basic but is on Proseries Pro, i'll use that and pay per return.Anyone know the deal?

by the way I know this is an old post, which form do you use 1040 or 1040NR, this is more of an issue with southern american people who work for years in USA without leaving the country.

Yes it does allow you to efile with an ITIN. I'm using Basic and about 50% of my clients have ITIN's. Just make sure that their last name isn't hyphenated. One case I had the first and middle name were actually set-up as his first name. Ex: ABC EFG Smith - First name was ABC EFG and Last name Smith.

Thanks Jeannie! I have had similar problems with some other clients who have SSNs, but i kept trying different combinations of middle/last names until they were accepted. i'll try it again with the ITIN.

Is it possible that the person was recently married and never changed their name? Had a situation where the couple had been married for a number of years but she never changed her last name with SS office. Just a thought.
