Invoices Won't Print

I'm having trouble printing invoices. I can print everything else just fine, but when I go to the "Print" option and select either "Preview" or "Print". I get an error message that says, 'QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'...and then once I click, "Debug", "Send Error Report" or "Do Not Send" QuickBooks automatically closes. I don't know what to do anymore. I just recently upgraded to the QB Premier 2007 Contractor Edition and this is the first time I have printed an invoice since installing it. I have been on the phone with tech support all day. I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same issue?

I am having the same exact problem! I recently upgraded to the 2007 version also. I had revised/customized our invoice just prior to the upgrade and everything was fine...I was an invoice printing fool! Now I can only print the template. I've gone through every setting on everything and it still won't work. It wouldn't be so annoying if it didn't shut down the whole program every time.

If I figure it out I'll let you know.

By the way, how does the Contractor's version differ from the regular PRO edition? I know there are different features and probably better tracking, but does it really make that much of a difference?

Hi All,
First of all, I apologize for the agravation this is obviously causing.  I have not heard of this issue before.  Please provide me with some basic information so I can try to isolate the cause.
1.  What version of Windows are you using?
2.  What release of QuickBooks 2007? (you can get this by pressing the F2 button when QB's is open)
3.  Does this happen in a sample company file?
4.  What is the brand/model of the printer you are using?
5.  Do other forms (estimates, reports, checks, etc.) print OK?
Steve

Vista 32 bit, QB Pro 2009. Printed fine for over a year and then it stopped. Uninstalling and re-installing the software did not help.

Thanks

1. Windows XP Home Edition
2. QB Pro 2007 Release R1P
3. No
4. HP Business Inkjet 1100
5. Yes

It just makes absolutely no sense. If I go to any other invoice and change it to a Progress Billing (customized invoice) I can't print it. The print window will open and then it seems to get stuck for about 45 seconds and then the shut down message appears. However, once I change it back to an Intuit Service Invoice it will print just fine. The printer icon shows up on my taskbar like it is receiving the request but it won't do anything until I respond to the "encountered a problem" error message and once I do that it goes away.

Thank you for your replies...
I believe the problem is damaged templates.  That's why an invoice will print with one invoice but if you change to another it won't.  I'm still not sure how this could have happened since QuickBooks doesn't make any changes to the templates when converting the file for the new version.
Now, let's see what we can do to get this resolved.  First, identify the templates that are causing the malfunction.  You can do this by opening an invoice, make a note of the invoice name (Upper right corner), and then attempt to print.  If it works OK, change the template name until you've tried them all and know which ones don't work.
Next, export the broken template.  You can do this by opening the 'Lists' menu and selecting 'Templates'.  Select the name of the broken template.  Click the Templates button at the bottom and select 'Export'.  Specify a location to save the file (you will need to know this location later) and click Save.  QuickBooks will 'build' the template in the file location you specifed.
Now, go back to the templates list and rename the template you exported (something like 'do not use').  Next, using the template button, select 'Import'.  Browse to the location where you previously saved the file.  Click Open.  Once the import is complete, open an invoice and change the template to the newly imported one.  See if you can print.  If it works OK, you may want to rename the new one to be what it was before.
This should take care of any 'new' invoices you create.  However, all of the invoices created with the 'old' template will still be using the 'old' template so you'll need to change the template before you print.
Let me know if you have any problems...Steve

Okay, I finally got mine to work. I realized that I created the template from a blank one so I went in and made a copy of the "Intuit Service Invoice" and then customized it from there. Invoices are printing just fine now. It was a time consuming process - but at least I can bill customers now :).

I have no idea what is causing this and I don't think anyone else will figure it out. I am a "solve the problem now" kind of person - if I have to spend a little time recreating things it's better than waiting for an explanation that will not come.

I think QB is a great program, but like any other accounting software, it has its quirks. Good Luck.

I Can't Print batches and then Quickbooks shuts down. Any suggestions? I just upgraded to QB Premier 2007 retail edition.

1. XP
2. QB Premier 2007 retail edition.
3. Haven't tried this yet
4. I have tried printing from three computers to three different printers: HP photosmart 1000, HP Laser Jet 4L, and a Konica Magicolor 2300w

5. PO's and invoices print. I haven't tried checks yet.

Thanks to all for the input.  I'm continuing to research this issue.  There are a couple of possibilities.
1.  A damaged sales tax item is causing the issue.  You can determine if this is your issue by looking in the Items list at your sales tax items.  Look in the 'Price' column of all sales tax items to see if any are listed as 0.00%.  If this is the case, you can resolve this issue by downloading and installing an update patch located here.
2. A damaged template is causing the issue.  Try printing your invoice using one of the default templates.  If this prints OK, change back to the original (damaged) template, click the 'Layout Designer' icon at the top of the invoice,

Then click the 'Additional Customization' button at the bottom of the customization window.  Click the 'Default' button at the bottom of the page.  This will force ALL customization to be removed from the template.  You can now re-customize the template to your specifications.
I recommend that you try downloading and installing the R3 update before doing this step in the hope that it will resolve your issue without having to remake your custom invoices .
Please let me know what your results are...Steve

started to help by changing the layout. Now I only get very little errors here and there but they can be fixed by changing the layout again.

similar problem & have spent days on phone with tech support trying to get invoices to print correctly. I have downloaded software onto new computer & imported data. Only the top 25-30% of invoice will print - same with sample.

1) sony Vaio

2) Hp 5510 all in one

3) none of my templates will print properly

4) sample won't print properly

Very frustrating

I only use one template, the one I customized. It has worked just fine for years, through several versions of QB. Now with 2007 using the same template, it will print most of my customers invoices, but will not print a few of my customers invoices. It is the same template used with all customers. I have tried exporting, and creating a whole new template. The new template will not allow me to add a sales tax field..............
Any suggestions???

Try making a copy of one of the QB invoices and reformat it. It worked for me.

I think there might be a problem with the blank template.

I desperately need some help. My QB printed an invoice yesterday and will not at all today. I notice it did loose my logo on yesterdays invoice but that is all.

Today I have been working on this for the last 4 hours and I have tried the import/export with no success.

The thing mine is doing I can open other templates and see them and everything else seems to print. But when I go to the the original or a newly down loaded invoice or my customized template invoice the preview is blank and when I click on layout designer it just flashes on my screen, it will not open for me to even build a new invoice.

Yes when I got to the web and download as long as the template is not (invoice) I get them and can edit them and view them. If it is an invoice template then the page comes up blank and will not let me edit,
