INV appears as payment in chk reg when payment recorded, why?

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2009

I created an invoice in Oct 2009 and received a payment on it in Jan 2010.
After depositing the payment (from undeposited) my check reg bal was short the amount. I looked back and in Oct there was an entry id'd as INV with a payment for the amount.

It sounds like someone posted a "Payment" (type) Item on the Invoice, at the time the invoice was 'created'.  If the Payment type item was set to post directly to your Bank Account rather than to Undeposited Funds, QuickBooks posts the source transaction of the Deposit as an Invoice.

I hope this helps you track it down.  If this answers your question, PLEASE Mark Your Question as "SOLVED".  I am only about a gizzillion points behind everybody, so I need every single point I can muster or beg for.

Best of Luck !

Murph, Based on the answer, I went in and deleted the invoice and created a new invoice being careful not to mark anything.  I am wondering if this could have anything to do with year end and accrual acctg?  The invoice was created before year end and the payment was received after Jan 1.  My fiscal year is calendar year.

P.S.  Same result the new invoice appeared in the A/R detail, which I needed, but the invoice went right back into the checking account saying INV in where DEP etc usually appears.

The solution

What's the item you're using on the invoice? That item SHOULD be posting to an income account, and it appears to pointing to the bank account instead. Look at the setup of your item.
