installing quickbooks 2000 in Windows 7

I bought a new computer with Windows 7 and I can't get my quickbooks 2000 to install. I know it is an old version, but all I need it for is posting income and expense items for my farm... Any suggestions on what to try?

QuickBooks 2000 is not supported on Windows 7. If you want to use quickbooks on Windows 7 then please use QuickBooks 2010.

Thanks,

Sumit

Why not use a free version, QB Simple Start? It is likely the limitations in that program won't impact the work you are doing, and all data is the same from Simple Start through Pro and Premier, until you get to Enterprise; Enterprise has a different data file structure.

I had  no idea there was a free version.  If I download this, is it only for my use on my computer and I can use it offline?  Is my data safe and private?  I know I'm stupid about this, just want to make sure my info can't be seen by anyone other than myself.  Seems like there is a catch somewhere.  I'm probably just being paranoid.  Thanks for the advice

The only "catch" is, this is a limited function version. Based on what you said, it might be all you need.

http://quickbooks.intuit.com/product/accounting-software/free-accounting-software.jsp

The program installs on your computer and it uses the data file you already have, which also is on your computer.

Because it is such as jump (2000 to 2010) you might have a conversion error. If this happens, find someone who has a version of QB that is in between, so you convert in two small leaps instead of one large one. All the files are the same except for QB Enterprise. Oh, I see the SImple Start listing includes "imports data only from prior versions Simple Start" so this might not work for you unless you want to start a new file, too. There have been sales on QB Pro; last Dec just before Christmas Staples had it for a full rebate. Keep watching prices.

Sorry if I didn't explain but it sounds like you are telling me instructions to install on my old computer which had Quickbooks 2000.  What I am trying to do is install on a new computer that does not have quickbooks.  I was trying to install the software for Quickbooks 2000 on my brand new computer with windows 7.   Will this work ok then?  Sorry if I wasn't clear.  Thanks for your advice

What you are being told by sumit_agarwal and me is that you have to install one of the new versions of QB. Nothing older will work on Windows 7. You might get something older to install under XP-mode, but it probably won't be reliable.

I have tried to post another question but no one answered so I will try this again.  sorry to be a bother.  I tried to download the free version and I kept getting error messages.  Appeared not to like my operating system,,, Win. 7.  Anyway, it also said it was only for 30 days, so I am going to purchase the cd version of either quickbooks or quicken.  Can you tell me which version of both will let me set up two different farm accounts and change the expense catagories to reflect farm expenses etc.  Thanks for your help

I am using QuickBooks on Windows 7 without any trouble. For older versions you may want to use the XP Mode feature that is available if you have the Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate versions of Windows 7. I don't recommend trying to use the home or other limited versions.

See this article for some info that might help: http://qbblog.ccrsoftware.info/2009/10/quickbooks-and-windows-7/

If I buy QB 2010, can I restore my QB2000 backup file into the QB2010 and keep right going?  Or will I have to enter in all of my beginning balances manually?

Technically, yes. QB 2010 should convert the file. BUT when you make that big of a jump, sometimes the conversion doesn't work well. That is a big jump in the structure of the database and sometimes things don't work right. So, don't get rid of QB 2000 until you know that the conversion worked. Usually for that big of a jump I do it in stages, converting first to QB 2005, then possibly to QB 2006 or 2008, then to QB 2010, to take it through the major internal changes (you can get a ProAdvisor to help with that, possibly). Also, it depends on how clean your starting data is.

But, in many cases, you can make the jump directly without problems.

I have exactly the same problem.  I am trying to run QuickBooks Pro 2000 on Windows 7 Home Premium because I bought a new computer.  First, autorun complained about not being able to write a "run key".  I ran autorun as administrator and got by this but at the very end it had trouble accessing the fonts.  I ran setup as administrator and the installation completed and seems to work OK.  I registered it using my old registration number and it seems OK with that.  It sees my data and runs reports which is all I need to do.  I haven't tried anything else.

I am interested in how you got your checks and reports to print from Quickbooks.  I also have Quickbooks 2000 and was able to install and run it on Windows 7, but I can't get anything to print.  It goes to the printer but never passes the spooling phase.  Can you give me some advice?

Here's a piece of advice. Sell that new computer and go to ebay or a local computer shop and buy a used computer in good shape running Windows XP. I built a new computer with all the latest stuff but loaded XP rather than have to pay to upgrade my earlier versions of QB, PhotoShop, InDesign CS and the list goes on. A computer is cheap, especially for what you are doing, but the software costs can be very high if you don't want to spend thousands upgrading perfectly good software to the latest version.

I have windows 7 home premium.  I installed quickbooks 2000 just fine.  It runs fine.  I put the disc in the cd slot (as opposed to the dvd one).  The box that came up onscreen had two choices: autorun.exe or open to see files.  I chose open to see the files and double-clicked on setup.  Then the wizard ran everything without problems.  No missing run key.  No unsupported fonts pop-up (both of which had happened when using the autorun choice).  Then I restarted the computer.  I had to use "restore" under the file menu to get my backup files .qbb converted to .qba (might have been .qbw) and now it's fine.  I had gotten it to work before on windows 7, but I had to wipe the drive to get rid of a virus and it took a while to figure out how again.  You may need to use the control panel feature that helps programs which worked in older versions of windows (under "programs" I think) if there are bugs.  Save your money and keep using the old version if it works for you.  That's what I'm doing.

That worked for me. I assumed it could be done since I had done it before in Vista.

Thanks, I'm not much interested in buying QB2010 for a lot of reasons, not least is QB2000 does all I need.

Intuit definitely tries to push you into new SW whether you need it or not.

I see that his is a really old post...  I like you would like to continue using my QB2000.  I brought my son's PC which has XP on it and hoping that it will work since I cannot get it to work on W7.  Now I find that my CD is cracked....   Does someone have a CD that they no longer use.....  Otherwise,  I thought that I saving the entire QB on a removeable device.... not not sure how to get it get it to work once I connect that to a USB port on the PC

Contact me directly via the email in my forum profile, I might be able to help you.

When you say that you saved it on a removeable device, if you mean the program files themselves, that won't help you. It needs to be "installed" with the installation program, as there are changes in your registry and so forth.

But, running QB 2000 on Windows 7 is going to be a bit painful. You may find that it is better to upgrade to the 2011 product. You will save a lot of time and hassle...

Browse directly to the setup.exe file in the quickbooks directory on the cd.

Run as administrator.

It will do the full install, then fail on the 'can't access fonts' or something. ctrl+alt+del, open task manager.  Kill the installer and then QUICKLY kill the subsequent popup that says 'can't install completely, cancelling setup'.

Then browse into programfilesx086/intuit/quickbooks, drag a shortcut for the qbfw32.exe to the desktop, and when you want to run, run as administrator.

As long as you kill the 'cancel setup' process, it doesn't have time to delete all the installed files.  I've found it runs just fine.

No need to buy intuit's latest bloatware version.
