Important Announcement! A planned system-wide upgrade will take place over the Memorial Day Weekend in the US (From Thurs, May 24, 2012 at 6 pm PDT thru Tues, May 29, 2012 at 5 am PDT). This includes QuickBooks, QuickBooks Payroll, Point of Sale, & Salesforce.com. This is only for US based products. This does not affect QuickBooks Online customers! During this time, you can shop, but can’t place orders online, activate products or update account info. We apologize for the inconvenience & thank you for patience while we improve our infrastructure to better serve you. International versions are unaffected. For more info, see our community discussion.

The solution

Typically all programs are in the Applications folder.

If the program's icon didn't remain in the Dock (the row of icons) when you exited, just start it again from Applications. Its icon will reappear in the Dock. Drag the icon to another place in the Dock (which will spread to make room). Now the icon will remain there always.

It is entirely possible you were running it from the disk. Installing the application just requires dragging the application package from the disk to the location you want it. As Rick mentioned the usual place is the Applications folder.

When you first opened the disc you should have seen a few icons. One was the application package. Another had an arrow pointing to it (if I remember correctly) and was labeled Applications. That is not actually your Applications folder but if you drag the application package to it, it will put the application in your Applications folder. Truly, I find it easier just to drag it where I want it.

Anyway, if you missed that second icon or thought that the download actually downloaded the application to the local HD, you may have opened the application from the disc rather than the HD. Just reinstall. Your company file should be in your Documents folder.

Alternatively, you can try double clicking the company file and it will find the application.
