Incorrect SSN on Return Mailed in

Incorrect SSN on Return

Incorrect SSN was entered into Pro Series  Form 1040 along with From 5405 and sent Snail Mail. The SSN was entered as 402-XX-XXXX instead of 412-XX-XXXX. Return has not been kicked back as yet as a mismatch. Any suggestions as to corrective action to take. Called IRS today and their only suggestion was to wait longer. I am in process of preparing letter to explain problem and also Getting Form 2848 ready. I would appreciate your suggestions

Sounds like that return is going to fall into some black hole someplace in the system.  Since those lovely 5405's are getting special treatment who knows if anything is going to speed up the process.  I guess I would get the power of attorney prepared and try a letter writing campaign - who knows if it will make any difference or not.

MJ, I agree with you and the coyote, the POA is one of the first things to have on hand. I would also contact the Practitioner Priority Line to see if the return has been received and processed. If so, many times they can fix the SSN on the return over the phone. Finally, I would go the letter writing route.

If my post did not answer your question, get a paid Intuit employee's answer for Lacerte questions at 800-933-9999. Oh, and enjoy the elevator music while you wait.

The solution

MJ - Not that I did one of those this year or anything - but here is what I did and it worked good.  Give the IRS time to receive the return and enter it into the system.  Call the Practitioner Priority Hotline and give them all the appropriate information.  They corrected this for me - err I mean if I had done one they would have fixed it for me - and the client received their money about 4 weeks later.

Although it won't hurt to have the 2848, if you had the 3rd party designee checked the IRS should discuss the return with you.

I did spend quite a bit of time with the Practitioner Priority Hotline this morning and they were trying to help, They know the return is in error resolution somewhere in Austin Texas and were going to try to help me fix it online But they cannot get anyone at the Error Resolution area to answer phones so I will have to wait for the Error Notification form  God Help Us when one IRS agency cannot get the other Agency on the phone
