Importing Group items

QuickBooks Point of Sale : Pro 9.0

Can group import items be imported from into POS Pro?

If yes - -

Should I transfer directly from QBF, or use the import template?

If using the template, will I have to import the component list first, or will it all import at once?

My motto:
Keep it as simple as you can. . .with only as much detail as you need.

When in doubt, make a backup first!!

Laura, the "Groups" are built in the POS.  I suggest you export your items from QBF, import them into POS after assigning departments to the items and then building your groups in POS.

Thanks - I can assign the department when invoicing.

Would you suggest creating a separate department for each group?

Are there sub-department options in POS?  or is that just 'styles'?

Also, do I have to create the departments in POS before the import, or will POS create the department, if it doesn't find it?

Laura, take a look at the pos import template. This will give you an idea of the import fields.

Would you suggest creating a separate department for each group? - When I work with clients in setting up their pos I take them trough a few steps:

  1. Define your departments and department codes.
  2. Assign each item to a department/code in your import spreadsheet. (If you import an item without a department assigned the pos will assign the item to the "System" department.
  3. Ensure each item name is no greater than 31 characters.
  4. Where item names are the same differentiate by attribute and/or size (this will build the style grid)
  5. When possible enter ALU's for each item (no more than 20 characters and each ALU must be unique). An ALU is the vendor product number.
  6. Build a Vendor excel spreadsheet.
  7. Assign each item to a vendor.

I hope this helps. If you wish I would be happy to review your import spreadsheet(s) with you.

Yes, thank you - this is very helpful.

I have been reviewing the item spreadsheet.

Actually, I am trying to move an item list from a QuickBooks file to POS - this item list has parent items and groups.

I understand that I will need to rebuild the groups in POS, but am not sure how to use the items/sub items, etc - - - perhaps the styles is what I need, but that will mean re-configuring the whole item listn (700+ items).

I may take you up on your offer to review this with me.   Thank you so much!!

Laura, export your item file from QBF and let's look at it together. I'm available tomorrow if you wish to work together then.
