Impact of the Government Shutdown

1. A large portion (maybe half) of the 1.9M non-essential civilian government workers will be furloughed
2. Some furloughed employees may become eligible for unemployment–you need to contact your state and the Labor Department’s “Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees”
3. Soldiers, security personnel and intelligence workers considered ESSENTIAL, though due to quirks in pay periods, there could be an interruption in pay
4. President, Congress and Presidential appointees get paid
5. IRS processes returns, delays refunds and suspends audits
6. Social Security checks go out as usual
7. USPS: Open and operating as usual
8. Museums/Zoos/Gardens/National Parks: Closed (lions & tigers fed!)
9. The Fed/FDIC/Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac: Operate normally, because they don’t rely on Congressional funds
10. NIH’s disease hotlines and CDC surveillance will likely shut down; no new participants to clinical trial.
