If you could make one change to QuickBooks Payroll...
what would it be?
what would it be?
I'm an accountant that has a client who is a temp agency. Although we only process from 100 to 175 checks per week the in/out of employees builds to 1000 to 1500 by year end. Need maximum number of employees to be bigger than 800...how about 2000? Also, each employee must have their own "employee bill rate" - Very Important so that it can flow through to invoices for time & billing as total hours @ each rate AS WELL AS being able to print a detail "employee hours/rate/billed amount" report by client, which of course would equal the total hours billed in summary format on the client's invoice. I use Peachtree currently, which has this capability, but use QB for all my other clients. Wish I could use QB for this client, too.
Lastly, if these capabilities were added it would be nice to be able to enter hours in a format similar to xl....right down the list, alphabetically, one after another (as long as you can choose the "customer" in the beginning so you don't have to keep choosing it for multiple entries). Thanks for asking!
Give me the ability to update the federal tax tables myself. I don't need to be protected from myself! And include all federal tax forms as regular maintenance. They only change once a year, if that often. Oops, thats two changes!
Undo everything new you did for 2007. For those of us who have been doing payroll in QB for many years, the 2007 changes are infuriating - every one of my clients who upgraded, who use payroll, contacted me to learn how to roll back to QB 2006. Several of them actually did so, returning their copy of 2007 and vowing to stick to 2006 until it is sunset and then moving to an outside payroll service.
Everything in 2007 is more work, and, even worse, is counter-intuitive. There's no logic, the onscreen text is unclear or illogical, and the changes provide no benefits, just aggravation and extra steps. While I understand that QB was trying to be helpful to users who have multiple payroll schedules (some weekly, some semi-monthly), this "cure" is no cure. If QuickBooks didn't "KILL" the Windows feature that lets you sort by column heading and then use the Shift key to select contiguous listings, users could have created paychecks for all weekly employees easily. But, instead, you came up with these ridiculously annoying schedules - and the payroll liability schedule feature is even worse - when a liability is paid, it disappears from the list, which is not reassuring when someone is "checking up" on the payroll person's work.
Amen! Amen! Amen!
But I'd be willing to bet my bottom dollar that it will never happen. This is why I left QB two years ago and am not sure I want to go back to it now.

Oh dear! And I was about to go buy QB 2007. Can I still get 2006?

Have an option/Preference to use Employee ID numbers instead of pulling employees by name only. (you have the field on the employee center but it cannot be used anywhere)
Have a preference/option to use scheduled payroll or pick and choose per pay period. (like the previous response)
Have employee regular pay rate default the same every time you pull up an employee on time sheets. If I pull a payroll item once as regular pay, then use it as overtime pay, then go to another employee with regular hours, the overtime rate shows up!
Have regular hours and overtime hours show up separately on time sheets instead of making a lump sum on the time sheets. It's hard to keep track of how many hours are regular pay and how many hours are overtime pay. It's easier to fix while in time sheets, then find it in "Create Checks" and have to go back to time sheets to correct.
Be able to change/correct a job in "Create Checks" after a payroll was processed and have it change throughout the reports and time sheets without having to start at time sheets then go back through the entire process.
Have the "Notes" column on "Time Sheets" print on time sheets report.
Find some way to have a "Short Pay" column on time sheets (from a previous week).
Be able to create a "Certified Payroll" report after a job has already been established.

On the Enter Hours page, enable items besides earnings to be added to the Show/Hide Columns list, so that you can actually complete a payroll session on this screen.
Institute an Electronic check numbering system to track electronic debits. I now have three check series - printed at home, manually written in the field, and electronic debit. If I check "online payment" QB thinks I'm using their payment service (but I'm really using the free one my bank provides so it won't go there).
Enable Memo or Notes to be printed on paychecks. "
Change the pricing of Direct Deposit. I am losing clients to ADP because I can't offer my clients a competitive rate for direct deposit thru QB.
Please consider different pricing to your customers who use this program to service payroll clients.
Thank you...Cathy
I would like to see complete employee information exported from one company to another. I create a new company each year, and while info concerning name, social, wages, etc. will export to the new company, I have to hand enter date of hire, date of birth, termination, etc.
I am a farmer and have 7 employees doing the same jobs on the same ranches each week. Soon I will be having 35 employees doing the the same jobs all week. Currently I have to enter the info separately on each timesheet, when I'm up to 35 employees each pay period this is going to take forever. I would change QB to allow me to copy one employee's timesheet info for a week to several employees who worked the exact same jobs.
I would like to be able to print multiple paystubs on one sheet of paper. The top half is not necessary. Another payroll program we used would print 3 stubs to a sheet.
Why can't the FICA be figured on each paycheck instead of the whole year? We have companies that pay there employees the same net pay all the time, Since the social security and medicare change all the time, you have to keep changing the state withholding to make the check be the right amount. WHAT A PAIN IN THE NECK!!!!!
I would like to be able to print paychecks and regular checks at the same time.
I have a problem with the dates on the process payroll and you have no way to fix it. If you go out of the area and come back it moves to the next week and you cant change it. I agree give me back 2006
I agree we should be able to print all checks together. I pay bills weekly and payroll weekly but have to print from different areas. I wish we could print all checks together.
Have automatic accruals each month: payroll accrual, vacation/pto accrual, reclass from payroll classes to GL classes. Ok, that's more than one, but ...
Please offer a different direct deposit pricing to your clients who offer payroll as a service to their clients. If a client has 10 bi-weekly employees and pays the direct deposit fees as stated it would add an extra $335.40 per year in costs. This is a hardship on small business owners. Small business owners always suffer the most in trying to keep there businesses afloat anyways. I know - because I am a small business owner competing against nationwide companies that can easily under price me to entice clients away. QB needs to look at the big picture. I have yet to hear a response in my request.
Give us back the functionality we paid for when we purchased the product. The ability to print 941 forms. Which was taken away without even telling the customers.

WOW what a list!
As a ProAdvisor and Developer I too have my own list of wants (sorry I will NOT stick to just one nor will I post x number of times each with one "wish"!)
I agree with removing the crap that was added to 2007 payroll. What used to take Pay Employees, select All, next, next, next etc is now a cumbersome mess. Payroll schedules are a good thing for those who are brand new to doing payroll but what about us that have been doing it for a long time? It's an insult (in some ways - like we can't remember when to issue payroll) and instead of being faster and easier it's longer and frustrating. How about making it OPTIONAL!
In QB I'd like to be able to link company contribution payroll items to payroll wage items. Case in point in companies have to pay Union Fringe Benefits - it would be nice to be able to set them up as company contributions and link them to a payroll wage item..
I'll leave my "Developer" wishlist for the IDN side. But these are my major gripes.
Hear hear - "crap" is a great description of the 2007 payroll changes. Most of our clients who upgraded to 2007 found the new crap so annoying, and so time consuming, that they're moving to an outside payroll service (if you count the worth of the payroll person's time, it's actually cheaper to use an outside service now). Maybe PayChex and ADP should write a thank you letter to the idiots who designed the new payroll system. More work, more time, and no additional features. What a stupid design! Maybe the QB programmers don't have enough to do and they just sit around and invent unneeded, unwanted, unnecessary stuff to fill their time. They sure didn't test this crap for usability.
