How to Setup Employee Type

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

employee type

We have 3 years of payroll for about 20 employees, but I need to separate the emplyee types by Management, Staff and Production. Currently there is only one type. How do I setup such types and then I would like to run a report of my payroll expenses by employee type. I looked everywhere in employee setup, and didn't see anything related to this that I could run a report with.

It sounds like you want to Class Track your employees. For more information on how to turn on and set up Class Tracking visit http://payroll.intuit.com/supp.... You can choose to assign a class per Employee or per Payroll Item. From your question it sounds like you want to track by Employee. Once you have your Class Tracking set up you can run a Profit and Loss by Class report to track expenses by Class.

If this answered your question, please mark it as solved. Thanks.

Thank you. I did setup the class successfully, but it seems it doesn't go back. Even though I assigned employees to the class and have class to be tracked. It shows class heading in P&L but none of the past payroll is classed that way. Am I right?

The solution

Shawnt--Unfortunately, setting up classes for employees or payroll items will not track retroactively. If you want to affect your historical reports you would have to go into prior paychecks and change or add the class.

I hope that helps. Thanks.
