Please confirm that the customer credit memo and the customer invoice are for the same "customer:job" name.

This is why it confuses me. The customer job is the same on the invoice and credit memo. the invoice is from 2010 and the credit memo was posted today. That shouldn't make any difference?! For some reason Qbooks does not recognize that there is pending credit memos that need to be posted.

When you look in the Customer Center for this customer, you see both these transactions listed for the same customer:job.

When you open the invoice, bottom right shows the total sale, any credits or payments applied, and then the balance still remaining to be paid.

When you click on Credits button, this shows credits for this name.

When you open the credit memo or the invoice, at the top, click on History to see what already is linked to each transaction. Perhaps it got applied already.
