How Do You Delete A Deposit?

I am just getting my first experience with QuickBooks and everything is a huge hurdle.I entered a check paid to me in advance to start a job. Because I didn't know what accounts were available I entered it into something like Money not deposited yet or something like that, and now I see there is an account for Money received in advance for work, which is where is should have gone. I understand that I need to delete this deposit so I can re-enter it under the correct category, but I do not know how to delete it. I can see the entry in several windows but there is no way to highlight it and hit the delete key nor do I find a menu command to 'delete transaction.'How do I delete this deposit?

You can run a report for banking and find the deposit or you can goto banking make deposit and go back thru the deposits to find the one you are looking for and edit>delete. If this has be reconciled, after you are thru reentering you data, be sure to go back into the register and put a check mark to show it has been cleared, otherwise you will be off on your next reconcilliation

Fortunately, I have entered nothing else but this one deposit. I am so clueless about QuickBooks that I am afraid at this point to do anything else with it until I understand how to handle my first transaction, which is that one deposit.I am really afraid to try to do anything else with the program right now, as each entry will compound the error of my lack of knowing how to use the program.I must ask, are there any tutorials to help the absolute beginner to do the simple things, like this deleting the deposit. You described the way to do it so well and I appreciated it so much, but there is nothing like this in the beginning instructions in the startup guide. Don't they know that a beginner is going to make mistakes and needs to know how to do the simplest things like delete a mistake? Please understand that I need the most basic help at this point, can you recommend where I should start. Even the startup guide is too advanced for me, as it assumes that I already know how to navigate the program - which I don't.I know all will be well as I learn, but now I know nothing and it's very frustrating. Can you recommend a place where I can get beginner info? Is there a book? A tutorial? A class I should take? Adobe software has wonderful 'Classroom In A Book' series for its graphics application software selections. Is there anything like that for QuckBooks? Thanks for helping me get off the ground with this,Appreciatively,Ken

This is horrible.I have gone to the Banking menu and selected make a deposit and then see the deposit but when I highlight the deposit all of the delete choices are grayed out under the edit menu and there is no delete choice in the bank deposits window. As I try to do more, I got lots of error messages as I tried to set up a banck account which it asked me for saying I could not enter the deposit as accounts receivable.Help.There must be a better way. Should there be so many error messages every time I try to do what it asks for?How can I make a simple deposit correctly? This is all I want to do at this point but it seems impossible.

The most complete, and easy to understand, explanations of all the things you do in QB is in QuickBooks: The Official Guide by Ivens. Another good source (but not nearly as comprehensive, especially in explaining special circumstances) is QB for Dummies by Nelson.

I am a big fan of Quickbooks for Dummies, and Bookkeeping for Dummies. Also, the Help file in Quickbooks is good.I always make a backup before I do any transactions in QB - that way, if I mess up, I simply roll back to the other file, instead of having to delete my mistake.Another thing you can do is practice in the Sample company that comes with QB.Worst case, since you only have one transaction in QB - start over, build the file again. This time, before you do any transactions, make a backup.Best thing you can do is make lots of backups.Check with your local Community Adult school. I took a 6 weeks class that only cost $40.Good luck, and post up your thoughts.Nu

Does it work well for the Macintosh version? Not everything functioned the same in the old QBP 2007 for Windows as in QBP 2007 for Macintosh, and the Windows version had features not included in the Mac version.Debi

Wow....talk about poor user experience. Yes, this works on a Mac. Double click the deposit in your transaction report under deposits. This will take you to the deposit information screen where you actually entered the erroneous information. Then go up to the edit menu at the top of your monitor and select Delete Deposit from that menu. The shortcut on a mac is Command + D. Unreal that they have that hidden like that....

I was having the same problem with payment receipts that you were having with

deposits, I could not figure out how to delete.  After reading the comments made

below, I realized that the secret is to double click on the entry you want to delete.

Then when you click on edit, the previously grayed-out choices are available.

I can't thank you people enough, I was so frustrated and the instructions in quick

book were just making me more frustrated.
