How do you create and estimate & invoice for a remodeling project?

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2009

how do you handle a remodeling job with various elements and costs associated with it? we'll have a job

that will require many different elements, supplies, labor, etc.  What is the best way to handle that in Quick Books, aside from setting up items for every different element.

Setting up detailed items is the correct way to do it. You can create just a couple and add the details to the "detail" area.

I can do this, but let me ask you, if I set up an item, say lumber, give it a cost and retail, then on the next job can I use lumber again but change the cost and retail for that job?

instead of changing the item every time it might be better to mark the bill as "billable" so you can add those expenses when it is time to invoice. (add time/costs)

I don't enter bills, I pay my vendors by credit card and enter credit card charges with the associated account, i.e. when I buy lumber, it goes to tools and installation supplies.

same thing, you can make that "billable" naming the customer so the charge carries through to put on the invoice.

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to make it billable.  Is there a check box at the item level or something...I'm obviously missing it!
