How do I start an e-newsletter for my new business?

In an effort to market my company and website, I would like to create and send newsletters to local businesses. How can I do this by email? I don't see that as an option from my web hosting company (homestead). I'd need some info on creating a mailing list, how to design it without having an existing HTML knowledge (but willingness to learn) and easiest way to distribute the newletter (any service providers that are affordable too).

You need to sign up for an email marketing software service like Constant Contact or iContact (there are many companies out there, but these are two that stand out).  They have templates you can use so your newsletters look professional and then all of your newsletters are sent out by their service.

They also provide you with forms you can put on your website so visitors to your website can register for your newsletter.  Once they sign up, they are automatically added to your newsletter mailing list.

I have written a blog article about building your email list, you can read it here:

Good luck with your newsletter!

Hi Igniting,

When starting an e-newsletter campaign you want to ensure you have permission to send the email to your list otherwise it is consider spam.  As you are out networking you can send offer a free tips list or something to individuals who sign up for your mailing list or inform them you would like to add them to your list because you have a great articles which relate to their needs.

In edition you need to add a form for people to fill out when visiting your site to fill out to be added to your email list.  When creating your form it is wise to use a double opt-in.  This means the individual signs up and then confirms their membership.  Most e-marketing companies have the code you add to your site available for you.

As for choosing a provider there are many.  One that I have been told about recently is Mad Mimi.  They are free if you have less than 100 contacts on your list and they have temples just like the others mentioned.

Remember your newsletter needs to provide worthwhile information.  A good rule of thumb is to focus on educating and informing rather than selling.  This can lead to higher open rates.  If you can get a consistent open rate of 45%-50% that is good.    Good luck!

Wishing you productivity and prosperity,

Kim
