You need to set up two other-tax-type payroll items, one for each wsib rate, just as you did for the hourly rate. After this is done, you may not need the separate hourly wage items.

Thanks i tried that  but now both wsib rates calculate on all payroll items. QB will not allow unchecking any payroll items when i setup the 2nd wsib item in other tax. I need to use only one or the other wsib rate never both. For the same employees depending on what type of work they did. (siding & exterior finishing or home building)

While defining the wsib items, in the last window called taxable compensation, you specifiy on which earning items the tax should apply. So you need to re-edit the two WSIB tax item and assign the hourly wage accordingly.

You may also have to consider how to pay vacation pay. You may have to charge all vacation pay to one rate because I do not think QB allows creating additional vacation items.

Thanks HammerMan29 i have tried that from the begining but Advance is the only  type of payroll item QBs allows me to uncheck in the taxable compensation window. when i try a warning box pops up saying (The item you selected cannot be unselected. This type of payroll item is always taxable in Quickbooks)

I also tried setting it up as a company contribution but that just creates a whole new set of problems as well as wage and vacation pay items not showing up in the taxable compensation window so therefore cannot link to them.

Surely there are more more companies with 2 or more workers compensation rates using quickbooks?? How is everyone else doing it??

I guess this is another case where Intuit has "dumb down" QB to the point where someone who knows what to do and how to do it, cannot do it. The only suggestion I can offer now is to use QB's reports with Excel to calculate WSIB. My guess is that companies with 2 or WSIB rates assign each employee to only one rate classification.

Set up the two WSIB items in QB Payroll. When you get to the Calculate Based on Quantity window. select calculate this item based on hours (both WSIB items). When you create a paycheque, you can now manually input the number of hours (in the Quantity field next to the rate) associated with the different WSIB rates and QB will calculate accordingly.

This is not a solution to the OP problem. WSIB is based on wages paid (including vacation), not hours worked, and every employee can be paid at a different wage rate.

Sorry - when setting up the WSIB items, select Calculate Based on Quantity in the calculate based on quantity window. Manually input the $ amount earned based on the Pay Rate.

Regardless of whether you enter the # of hours or the $ amount, QB calculates the WSIB at the prescribed rate using the Gross earnings associated with the Pay Rate.
