The solution

Which backup? Earlier than 2013 use file open. 2013  a kips are DMG files. Double click the file, when the DMG mounts drag the quickbooks file to your desktop or where ever you want the file, double click to launch the file.

Thank you.  Everytime I tried to follow the instructions on restoring, and tried to open the file, I got a "Read Only" message asking me to change the folder permissions.  But I couldn't find where I could do that.  It took me a few tries (and a few hours), but I finally got the file to open.  It had something to do with the 'Attachment folder'.  I had to create one (even though I had no other docs to attach) and then when I backed up, I had to back up in that folder.  When I dragged both the dmg file and the attachment folder to a different folder, I was finally able to open the company file.

Thanks again for taking the time to help.
