How do I record rent payments made to my company by tenants?

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2009

 

Right now I am recording the rent payment due as an invoice and then paying the invoice when the rent payment comes in but the invoices show up on my P & L even though the rent payment has not been paid yet.

Modify P & L to cash basis. Modify report (top left hand corner of the report)> Display tab: cash basis for the rent payments received.
