How do I record a downloaded credit card charge to an item and not an account?

Just "upgraded" to 2009. I was previously using 2006 and this worked fine.

I download transaction from credit card to QB using online banking. Then I add credit card charge and assign the value to an item, so that the value flows through an item to an account.

But on this new quickbooks, it is forcing me to input an account when I add the transaction, and it never even takes me to the actual transaction so I can change it to an item. How do I input item transactions without having to add them as expense transactions, dig them back out of the list of the credit card account and change them manually?

You can switch back to Register Mode which looks like the online banking from QB 2006.  Go to Edit and preferences and choose Checking.  Then click the Company Preferences tab.  Then select Register Mode and click ok.
